Hackers Target Children as Adults Wise Up to Spam

French hacker who sabotaged the account of US ...

Hackers are targeting websites aimed at children, by embedding
malicious software in free gaming sites, praying on the young as adults
grow wise to their strategies.

Child-focused malware first affected Chinese sites last year, but now
arcade game sites worldwide are growing increasingly susceptible to
malware.

Avast, a European anti-virus firm, reported more than 60 arcade game
sites with threatening, malicious software. The company singles out
CuteArcade.com as the worst offender.

CuteArcade.com, registered to a company out of the British Virgin
Isles, features a trojan on the site itself. Avast researchers believe
some of the sites are designed specifically with infection in mind, and
think CuteArcade.com is one of those sites.

I have not tried this, but am passing the information along:

Cocoon offers protection from malware and drive-by-downloads. Once logged into Cocoon, no information touches your hard drive because it is all stored on our servers. The hackers can’t get to you or your children. It is currently available as a Firefox plug-in, but will soon arrive with a few more flavors (Internet Explorer and IOS).

Payment and Services
The Cocoon toolbar add-on is free and is used to deliver the Cocoon service. The Cocoon basic service is free. The Cocoon Premium service will at some point be a for pay service.

I don't see anything on their website that compares the free and Premium services.

1)  Cocoon is incompatible with the Family Shield version of OpenDNS, which blocks the site as being a Proxy/Anonymizer.   [That's not to say it's necessarily bad, only that it can't be used in conjunction with the protection I'm already using.]

2) Interestingly enough, I CAN access some information about Cocoon on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/GetCocoonFanPage?sk=wall#!/GetCocoonFanPage?sk=app_158086484245654    On the one hand, I see a sub-page that starts with "Cacoon is FREE"... but on the other hand, later down on that page, I see where it says "TRY it free.   30-day free trial".   So I think we have to clarify whether there's a truly free version, or if it's just a limited free trial which expires after 30 days.

EDIT:   Using a different machine (with OpenDNS but NOT its Family Shield) I can see that "The Cocoon toolbar add-on is free and is used to deliver the Cocoon service. The Cocoon basic service is free. The Cocoon Premium service will at some point be a for pay service".

Looks like Joe posted the same thing at the same time...

That would be helpful, wouldn't it?

Follow-up information on Cocoon:

They've updated ("corrected") their FB page to state that Cocoon is FREE.   Their FAQ webpage https://getcocoon.com/support/faq now indicates:   "Cocoon is free and supported by advertising. In the future, Cocoon will offer a premium version for a monthly subscription".

The FAQ page also points out that Cocoon is INcompatible with some popular FF add-ons, including:   Web of Trust (WOT), NoScript, and the Yahoo & Google Toolbars.     I have already noted above that it's incompatible with the Family Shield version of OpenDNS.   Furthermore, there is a known bug when Cocoon tries to access secure Facebook pages, "breaking" their appearance:  "You can workaround this issue until a fix is released by Cocoon by either disabling the 'Block Facebook Tracking' feature in Cocoon Preferences or by disabling Facebook’s 'HTTPS security' feature in your Facebook Security preferences".

Having pointed out several negatives (incompatibilities), in the spirit of fairness, here's an article which gives a rather favorable description/review of Cocoon:   http://www.extremetech.com/internet/89840-cocoon-goes-free-the-one-shot-solution-for-secure-and-private-firefox-browsing

That is very interesting.  Too bad I don't use FF anymore considering it just stopped performing faster than Internet Explorer, so I took it off.
