DirectX offering [pre-checked] Bing toolbar

Just to let everyone know, there's allegedly an updated version of DirectX ("the core Windows® technology that drives high-speed multimedia and games on the PC") now available.   But when I went to download/install/update mine, the only thing new was a PRE-CHECKED offer to include the BING toolbar --- which fortunately I caught.   After UNchecking it (to opt-OUT), it advised me my DirectX was already up-to-date.  :emotion-12:

Note:   I did this on two WinXP SP3 systems.   Perhaps the "updates" may apply to some of the newer Window's systems???

ky:

I too found that this latest installer of DirectX offered me the pre-checked Bing Bar (and would change my default home page to Bing.com), on both my XP Pro/sp3 and my Windows 7 Pro systems.

Unlike you, when I unchecked that option, DirectX did update several components on both computers. I previously had a 9.0c version, so these were minor updates, not a major version change. (It's still 9.0c).

I ran a DirectX diagnostics both before and after updating. Both indicated no problems.

I do note these were not security updates. Since I'm not a gamer, they were probably not needed.

Joe,

the designation "9.0c" has been around for a very long time now, and has not changed, despite there being occasional updates over the past years.    If I'm not mistaken, the last update (prior to this one) was in June, at which time I actually received some file updates.    Perhaps, if you overlooked it then, you're getting those updates now?

You are probably correct that I missed that June update.

Microsoft's explanation is that this latest update is a re-working of the June version, with some cosmetic/font changes:

But I suspect the major reason was just a sneaky attempt to push Bing on unsuspecting users.

Hi guys.

I did the update in July. So before I updated again a couple of day ago, I made note of the version I had in my machine "DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)" then I went ahead with the new update. It seems to add new files but my version is still the same "9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)". Be advised that mine is in Spanish and may not be the same serial number.

Regards.

Hernan,

I'm showing the same 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) here [via DxDiag].

Moving to the DirectX files tab, I find 4 files dated in 2010:

quartz.dll (2/5/2010)  [version 6.05.2600.5933] size 1,291,776 , located in C:\WINDOWS\system32

mfc40.dll (9/18/2010) [version 4.01.0000.6151] size   954,368 , located in C:\WINDOWS\system32

mfc42.dll (9/18/2010) [version 6.02.8073.0000] size   974,848 , located in C:\WINDOWS\system32

system.dll (9/30/2010) [version 1.01.4322.2470] size 1,232,896 ,  apparently located in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322

Files were located by searching via Windows Explorer --- and matching up sizes/versions when there were multiple files of the same name.

I have to wonder whether something like system.dll could have been "delivered" as part of a .NET update ????

quartz.dll was the subject of an "extremely critical" vulnerability about a year & a half ago:  http://secunia.com/advisories/35268/  , but the one we now have is newer than the one released then (version then was at most 6.05.2600.5822 , as I documented in  http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3522/p/19294789/19554108.aspx#19554108  )

Hi David.

Same here with a little differences in size (in red) and date (in black).

* Day and month backwards because of OS language.-The right way. Day first, month second, and year last:emotion-2:-

quartz.dll (05/02/2010)* [6.05.2600.5933] size 1.297.920

mfc40.dll (18/09/2010)* [4.01.0000.6151] size 954.368

mfc42.dll (18/09/2010)* [6.02.8073.0000] size 974.848

system.dll (02/10/2010)* [1.01.4322.2470] size 1.232.896

Also same locations; however, I have:

system.dll in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight

System.dll in C.\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322

System.dll in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

Note that for .NET (S) in cap while for silverlight is a small (s) like it is written in Run > dxdiag > Files.

I also have up to .NetFramework 3.5 installed in my XP.

You said:

"I have to wonder whether something like system.dll could have been "delivered" as part of a .NET update ????"

Could it be added to :NET when directX is installed???? and what about Silverlight, or the fact that two are written in caps or not?????

I also have this installed yesterday, and in English. (I thouth I installed Direct a couple of days ago, my bad. Must be getting old)

Hernan,

Like you, I also have multiple copies of system.dll  --- the location I cited, as being in C.\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 , was the only one which agreed in version/size with what DxDiag cited.

Since there have been numerous updates for DirectX, .NET, and Silverlight, I have no way of knowing which one(s) might have updated the other's files.

David.

You are right. System.dll in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322 is the only one that matches V. 1.01.4322.2470 .

Have a good night.

According to the current specifications listed here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

DirectX 9 CAN be installed on Windows XP SP2 or SP3 [Service Pack 2 or 3].   (SP1 is no longer supported)

[Prior to the most recent update, it used to be the case that DX9 was even compatible with Windows 98/ME --- but not any more]

I can personally assert that I am using DirectX 9 on several Windows XP3 machines.
