Network difficulties - Can't get WPA to work with LINKSYS router

I exchanged my Linksys BEFW11S4 for WRT54G to take advantage of more secure WPA format.

My network is functioning properly when set to Network Authentication: Shared and Data Encryption: WEP

When the network is set to Network Authentication: WPA-PSK and Data Encryption: TKIP I can not establish any communication between my two computers.

This is true whether I try to set it up through Intel Pro/Wireless Lan 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter or through “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings”.

Regarding Intel Pro/Wireless Lan 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter I have Driver V 1.2.0.56 which, according to Intel website supports WPA communications.

As far as Windows XP, I installed Q815485_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe patch and I also updated through Windows Updates and downloaded KB826942 (Wi-Fi protected access is now available for XP).

After spending an hour and one half on the phone with Linksys support technician, trying different options (like changing channels, SSID, enable and disable broadcast of SSID, different pass phrases (ASCII) and hexadecimal values settings) we were unable to make it work.

If anyone could help me with any suggestions to get this thing to work I would really appreciate it as I am at a compete dead end and back to WEP where I prefer my site to be more secure and use WPA.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Ratz

If your able to select the WPA-PSK option in the network card wireless configurtion utility that it should work. Did you try using WPA-PSK AES ?

Your passpharse should be like a sentence. Example: I love WPA

Thanks for the reply. I am still battling the no WPA. I am unable to use AES as only TKIP and WEP are listed under the data encryption. However, I can see the AES you are suggesting in router listings only. Are you saying I should set router to AES and wireless card to TKIP???

Thanks,

Ratz

That won't work.  The encryption method has to be the same on the AP and the client, so you have to use TKIP on both.

Its sounds like it might be the drivers for the wireless card. Are you using the latest firmware and drivers ?

This is really frustrating. I found more recent firmware 1.42.3 for WRT54G Router on Linksys website which includes new driver. The version I have is 1.41.2. However when  I click download, my Norton firewall tells me it is infected with "Soket de Trois v1" Trojan horse. What gives??? Called the support and was told they will e-mail me the new version.

To be continued

Drivers version for the wireless card is 1.2.0.56 and according to Intel website is the correct version to support WPA.

Thanks for the input

Finally, it is working in WPA mode. Updated router to v1.42.3 and changed Authentication from Shared Key to Auto. Still some concern about setting it to Auto, but perhaps that it how WPA-PSK works. Little more research and then I am hopefully done.
