U2520DR, activating USB downstream ports?

I have a Dell UltraSharp U2520DR and want to activate the USB downstream ports. Apparently, I need to connect the USB "upstream" port on monitor to the USB port on computer. What is an "upstream" port? I looked at the figures in the manual but there is nothing labeled "upstream". Also, do I need USB-C on both ends?

Thanks.

@mariko57 According to the User's Guide, the monitor also came with USB Type-C to C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A cable. If you don't have USB Type-C on your computer, use the USB Type-C to Type-A cable to connect to the upstream port on the monitor. The USB upstream port is the USB Type-C port labeled #6 in the User's Guide.

Since the USB Type-C port is USB 3.0 you should use a USB Type-A port on the computer that is also USB 3.0 if you have one.
