bootmgr is missing .... Vista install cd wont finish need game plan to make bootable dos cd with "scandisk" or chkdsk

Just took posession of a Dell d610

get "bootmgr missing" after bios boots

no operating system installed

Vista install disk gives  "file not found" error message during install

I want to make a bootable dos disk, run scandisk and cover any bad

sectors.  I'm assuming the missing boot mgr file won't prevent running scandisk and other dos tools from a dos boot cd

anyone know just how to make that cd? I assume it needs an auto exec.bat file? written somhow?

Thanks for any help

Tim

If you know there are bad sectors, replace the hard drive.

F12 at powerup will get you to the Dell diagnostics to confirm that it has failed, as it almost certainly has.

Thank you EJN

Thats what I figure too but as i have more time than money... and  have read one thread, where chkdsk fixed these symptoms just thought I'd give it a try.

But so far, All the iso's for bootable dos, Ive found are to be written to floppy, (allbootdisks.com).

So I  hoping to find one for cd or another idea before attempt to build a hiren or  barts, which would be a curve for me
