It depends on the system model; on most of the newer consumer-grade systems (Inspiron/Vostro/XPS), it's FN-F3.

Thanks. It is a Dell 17R with Windows 8 (Ugh) and I finally got there via the Mobility Centre link which gives a disable touchpad option. Seek (long enough) and ye shall find!
