Shut Down, Standby or Hibernate

Is it best to shut down, standby or hibernate a computer overnight? Thanks

I never shut down my computer unless I have to fix it. I just turn off my monitor and let my computer sleep.

sailbuk,

It makes no difference to the computer, but turning it off saves energy. Take a look at the pertinent article here.

Hi

Dell doesn't recommend using Standby or Hibernate on Desktops.

This is copied from Dell Tech Support to me:
There are dozens of common programs, utilities, and device drivers
that may conflict with power management and standby. One result is
a system that will not 'wake' from standby mode. Another is slow
system operation and random lock-ups. Often it is necessary to decide
between running such an application and using standby and power management.
Our experience at Dell technical support is that customers generally
benefit most from disabling power management and standby and
turning the system off when it is not in use.

Here is what I do:
I set standby and hibernate to NEVER.
I have my monitor set to shutdown in 30 min of no use.
And my hard disk to shutdown in 30 min.
I shut the whole works down if I'm not going to be
using it in the next couple hours.
I have my keyboard sleep button setup for shutdown.

Used the above procedure on my IBM Aptiva for 6 years,
have never had a hardware problem.

The power savings alone are worth shutting down!

I agree with anthonyL88, My Acer has been shutdown for about 24hrs in the past 3yrs.,when she bogs down (she's old) i just restart. My new Dell has never been off. It's volital memory folks your system benifits in exactly the same way whether its >restarting/shutdown and restart< or>Shutdown for 8hrs. The status at the end of eight hours of shutdown is the same as the moment after power is cut. It's just that simple.

Thanks for all of your input. I'm going to keep on doing what I've been doing - shutting down every night. The only problem is then I have to run scan disk/defrag during the day which takes up a lot of time when I may want to use the computer. Guess you can't have it all.

I would shut it down because I was using standby and kept getting files corrupted, since I no longer use the standby no more problems

Mine hibernates when the power button is pressed and then we pull out the plug from the wall - so no power going in at all. Only about 15secs to come back on as well

With our firemans strikes and the extension lead (1 into 6) Im not relying on a 50yr old green goddess to rescue us ;-)
