M17x R3 CPU Upgrade Options?

I have a M17x R3 with a I7-2670QM that operates at 2.2ghz. I use it for Video Editing and it's starting to show it's age. I have tried upgrading the memory to as much as 20gb with no improvements. Has anyone tried upgrading to a more current processor like the i7-6700K? If so, did it work?

Side note: My desktop is an i5-6400 with 12gb of ram and does a much better job of handling the same program (without a video card).

Also, is there a list of CPU upgrades that have been successful?

Hi Andreas-MTB‌,

These are the validated CPUs for your system:

Intel® Core™ i7

2670QM - 2.2 GHz
2720QM - 2.2 GHz
2820QM - 2.3 GHz
2630QM - 2.0 GHz

Has anyone had success with unvalidated CPUs? Something a little newer in the 3 to 4 gigahertz range on this motherboard?

nothing other then as above works.. the R3 was a second gen  MOBILE intel cpu   system were as the 6700k was a desktop processor ..

M17X R1 = core 2  system

m17X R2 = first gen i series

M17X R3 = second gen i series

M17X R4 = 3rd gen...

ect..  new series system brought new series cpu and video(sometimes)  and no way to get it to work otherwise without replacing  system..  or severe mods to get a board that supports it into the laptop..

but i do beleive the 2920XM Xtreme cpu works with this laptop but its still base clock of 2.5ghz ...

There are no CPU upgrade options for a board that has SOLDERED ON CPU.

This is also why there are no Processor removal instructions in the service manual.

this would be true if it was an alienware 17 .. but it is the older original M17X from 2011/12 when cpu and video were replaceable

The subject line says ALIEWARE 17 R3  so its not original.

The other way to answer is NO you cant use 2017 cpus on old motherboards and you cant use 2012 cpus on current motherboards.   Thats why we keep playing socket games going from lga 1155 to 1150 to 1151 to 1366 and 2011 etc.

" upgrading to a more current processor like the i7-6700K" is not possible because the socket is totally different as is the ram etc. This is NEVER possible either direction.

FCLGA1151 is not compatible with FCBGA1224, FCPGA988.  So the answer remains NO for the I7 6700K.

Not only has nobody done this nobody EVER CAN due to the aforementioned limitations between generations.
