need help with cpu upgrade

hello, i have a dell precision m6800 and i upgraded from a I5 4310M to a I7 4700MQ and the upgrade went fairly smooth, however both the bios and task manager of win10 thinks it has 2 cores and 4 threads which the i7 4700MQ doesnt, its a quad core with 8 threads so does anyone know a fix?

Something is wrong with either the CPU or the mainboard;  see the rest of my replies.  If this is a newly purchased CPU, have the seller replace it.

If that doesn't solve the problem, the systems is worth $100-200 so keep that in mind before buying a system board for it.

You'll find there are different system boards for this model -- the one that supports dual core only and the other, which has support for quad core CPUs.  The dual core board has two memory sockets, while the quad core board has four.  There are also differences in display support -- some support EDP screens, while others use an LVDS connection, so if you are now in the market for a board, buy carefully (or buy a complete used system, which likely won't cost much more than a board by itself).

Given the advanced age of the CPU and system, anything is possible, ranging from a CPU that's been re-marked to damaged pins on the CPU or a damaged CPU socket.  Do you have access to another system you can test with?

@ejn63 nope this is the only laptop I have with an upgradable CPU, also the pins aren't damaged, they're all standing straight up, I also went to hwinfo and it does detect I have 4 cores and 8 threads but it also shows in another page that its 2 cores and 4 threads, I will post a follow up picture in a few mins if you don't get it

You really need another set of hardware that you know works correctly to do any troubleshooting.  Assuming the CPU was purchased used, it could easily be damaged or given an unknown history, have been remarked at some point.  And you have a system that's over a decade old, so you could equally well have a damaged mainboard with weak voltage regulators or other components on it.

If your CPU supplier offered a warranty, have them swap the CPU as a first attempt -- if that doesn't solve the problem, the next step would be a replacement mainboard (or system, since as I wrote earlier you're likely to find the boards cost as much or more than a complete, working used system does).

@ejn63 is it really a main board issue? The first picture on hwinfo recognizes it fully

What does the Windows task manager show?  Does it show all four cores?
