Area 51-R2, 64GB Memory Support?

I see that the manual says the limitation is 32gb but everything I'm reading regarding the chipset and processor is that it should support 64gb.  Has anyone successfully upgraded to 64gb?

Found it. Uses the same stick as found in the Aurora-R5 =

V51K2 16GB, DDR4, 2133MHz, 1RX8, 1.2v, Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, 288 pin, PC4-17000

I haven't heard of anyone getting that configuration going yet.
I'm very interested to see if it will work.
I'll come back to you if I find anything.

It looks like the biggest factor that I can find is that they simply don't make the 16gb stick yet.  It's supposed to come out this year per some reports.  Would Dell be able to verify this at some point?

No, you need non buffered non ECC if I remember correctly.

I see that you CAN now order 64GB RAM, on an Area 51 R2.

My question is: What's the best way for me to upgrade from my current 32GB, to 64GB?

Can anybody give advice, especially a link to a purchase page? :)

Note: Based on my prior Crucial.com orders for this PC, I think I just need to filter for "64GB Kit (4 x 16GB)", "UDIMM", "NON-ECC" (may not be a required filter), and make sure "Unbuffered". In a couple months, I will likely try this.

Thanks,

Jacob

Even though the first Area 51-R2 page list 64GB, the actual build page is limited to 32GB. Notice it states, "up to 64GB (additional memory sold separately)". As of today, the Area 51-R2 parts page does not list a 16GB stick. But if we take the 8GB and 4GB stick specifications, it will show you what to look for in buying a 16GB stick =

FN6XK 8GB, DDR4, 2133MHz, 1RX8, 1.2v, Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, 288 pin, NU, PC4-17000
61H6H 4GB, DDR4, 2133MHz, 1RX8, 1.2v, Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, 288 pin, NU, PC4-17000

The problem, when you go to crucial and search by = 64GB Kit (4 x 16GB), NON-ECC, PC4-17000

You get, "Your selection did not return any results, please review your selections.".

My advice, wait until the Dell part number for the 16GB stick is published. Then try to buy that specific Dell OEM memory stick.

I understand your advice.
However, are you sure it has to be "2133MHz" and "PC4-17000"?

Crucial currently lists:

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Alienware/area-51-r2-(late-2014)

these stick speeds:
- "PC4-17000 DDR4-2133"
- "PC4-19200 DDR4-2400"
- "PC4-21300 DDR4-2666"

...as being compatible for the Area 51 R2.... so ... I'm thinking a 16GB stick just needs to be DDR4, Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, regardless of speed.

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Alienware/area-51-r2-(late-2014)

... and probably needs that A08 Bios :)

So, I would think that a 16GB stick would just need to be Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, regardless of speed.
... and on the A08 BIOS, probably :)

When I expand the current Dell memory part numbers in our tools, it shows all of this data =
DDR4, 2133MHz, 1RX8, 1.2v, Non-ECC, Unbuffered UDIMM, 288 pin, PC4-17000

So if you buy PC4-19200 DDR4-2400 or PC4-21300 DDR4-2666 from a 3rd party and it doesn't work with our OEM bios, be sure to be aware of their return policy.

Thanks!

If anybody attempts the upgrade with Crucial RAM, please post your results. :)

Additional, Even with games on ultra settings and 100 fps, I only use 10% of ram.  For gaming you do not need more than 16gb.  But you do need high end video cards.
