증상

When expecting the failure of a HDD, it is recommended to check the Diagnostic LEDs first. Dell server, storage and rack workstations offers at least one of the listed possibilities to check the system's health.

원인

Once an issue has clearly been identified on the server, you should review the information in the following resource library  for further troubleshooting steps.

해결

Here is an overview of the options available to check the system's health via the different chassis indicators:

  1. Hard Drive Carrier Status LEDs
  2. Chassis Error Messages: Dell PowerEdge Servers 11th Generation and older
  3. Chassis Error Messages: Dell PowerEdge Servers 12th Generation

1 - Hard Drive Carrier Status LEDs

The LEDs on the physical disk carrier indicates the state of each physical disk. Each drive carrier in your enclosure has two LEDs: an activity LED (green) and a status LED (bicolor, green/amber) as shown below. The activity LED flashes whenever the drive is accessed.
LED Description
Off Slot is empty, drive is not yet discovered by the system.
Steady green Drive is online.
Green flashing (250 milliseconds [ms]) Drive is being identified or is being prepared for removal.
Green flashing (On 400 ms, Off 100 ms) Drive is rebuilding or undergoing a Replace Member operation.
Amber flashing (125 ms) Drive has failed.
Green/amber flashing (Green On 500 ms / Amber On 500 ms, Off 1000 ms) Predicted failure reported by drive.
Green flashing (Green On 3000 ms, Off 3000 ms, Amber On 3000 ms, Off 3000 ms) Drive being spun down by user request or other non-failure condition.

2 - Chassis Error Messages: Server-Dell PowerEdge Servers 11th Generation and older and storage servers based on common chassis

The Chassis LEDs or LCD are usually located on the upper left corner of the front.

Chassis LCD - Error Messages

Display Colors:

The display utilizes a dual-color LED back light with the following modes of operation:

  • For the System ID state: White letters on a blinking blue background.
  • For the Non-Alert state: White letters on a solid blue background.
  • For the Alert state: Very light amber letters on a dark amber background.
  • The display mode selected applies to the entire display. All five characters are displayed in the same mode.

Message Layout:

When a message is displayed on the LCD, the first five characters of the message contain the Message Code. The first character of this code defines the type of message as shown in the image below (Figure 1 (only English)).
