After upgrading to the latest version of the Windows 10 operating system, there have been a number of reports about the Nvidia Installer Failing. If you have the same problem then this guide will assist you in fixing this on your Dell PC.
Engineering has identified this as a software issue. They advise ruling out the graphics driver, taking the antivirus out of the equation, and killing any Nvidia processes that are running.
Try each of the methods below in order until one resolves your issue.
Update the Nvidia Driver:
Go to the Dell Support Site
Enter the service tag or express service code to get drivers specific to how your system shipped
Alternatively you can choose your Dell system from the product list to get a general list of drivers for that system
Click on the Drivers and Downloads drawer in the menu
Ensure you have the correct operating system set
Select Video from the category dropdown
Locate the Nvidia Graphics Driver and ensure it is the latest revision
Click on the download link and follow the online instructions
Some Anti-virus applications may cause the Nvidia installer to fail. Temporarily closing the anti-virus while you run a specific installer may resolve this issue:
On Dell systems the Anti-virus will display an icon in the system taskbar in Windows operating systems.
Right clicking on that icon will open up further options depending on the anti-virus manufacturer:
You can open the anti-virus application / agent to turn it off
You can turn off the active scanner
You can turn off the Anti-virus until the next system restart
Once the install is complete ensure you turn the anti-virus back on - you do not want to leave your system unprotected
Redundant Nvidia files and processes can lead to an installation failure. So we will take you through closing/removing them:
Open the task manager by right clicking on an empty part of the taskbar or by holding down the CTRL/Shift/Esc keys together and selecting Task Manager from the menu that appears.
Click on the processes tab
Select every process related to Nvidia
Right click on each and select End Task to close the process
Go to the boot drive folder and remove the following files:
C:\windows\system32\DRiverStore\FileRepository\nvdsp.inf file
C:\windows\system32\DRiverStore\FileRepository\nv_lh file
C:\windows\system32\DRiverStore\FileRepository\nvoclock file
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\
C:\Program Files(x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\
Restart your PC
Try rerunning the Nvidia installer in a custom install
Follow these steps to perform a clean installation from the Nvidia installer:
Have the system sit idle for 20 minutes to make sure that Windows has finished any updates for the upgraded operating system.
As in Section I, download the latest version of the driver to your PC
Close any other applications running on your PC
Run the driver unpack/install with Administrator privileges by right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as Administrator - you will need admin rights on this PC for this
Follow the onscreen instructions to the install options screen
Select Custom and place a check mark next to Perform a Clean Installation
Once the installation completes, restart the PC
