Fingerprint Reader Does Not Work on the Inspiron and Vostro Laptops

Symptoms

Fingerprint Reader stops working

 

Owners of Inspiron and Vostro laptops may experience one of two fingerprint reader problems.

First Scenario:

The fingerprint reader does not recognize your fingerprint. It shows the on-screen error: Sorry, something went wrong.

Second Scenario:

Nothing happens at the fingerprint enrollment screen. You repeatedly press a finger against the reader and nothing happens.

Inspiron and Vostro laptops that this problem affects:

  • Inspiron 14 5435
  • Inspiron 15 3511, 3510, and 3515
  • Inspiron 15 3520, 3521, 3525, 3530, and 3535
  • Inspiron 16 5635, 5640, and 5645
  • Vostro 14 3420, 3425, 3520, and 3525
  • Vostro 14 3430, and 3435
  • Vostro 15 3510, and 3515

Cause

The security driver can stop the fingerprint driver from doing anything.

Resolution

Updating to the latest fingerprint reader driver on the laptop resolves the issue. To download and install the latest fingerprint reader driver, follow these steps:

Note: You must have administrator rights on your laptop to make any operating system changes or update any software.
 
Warning: Downloading and installing Dell-developed drivers or software from third-party or unknown sources can cause the laptop or device not to work correctly. It can cause the laptop to crash or not boot into the operating system. In some rare instances it can infect the laptop with viruses, trojans, or other malicious software. Always install the approved drivers from your laptop model's page in the Dell Support Site.
 

  1. Browse to: Dell Support Site Drivers & Downloads Search Page

  2. Identify your Dell laptop:

    • To auto-detect your Dell laptop. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    • Enter the Service Tag of your laptop and click Search.

    • Click Browse all products and select your Dell laptop from the catalog.

  3. Select the Operating System that is running on your Dell laptop.

  4. Under Category, select Security.

  5. Locate the latest Fingerprint Sensor or Goodix Fingerprint Sensor driver. (Version from table.1 or newer.)

  1. Click Download and save the file to your laptop.

  2. Open File Explorer and browse to the download folder where it saves the download file.

  3. Double-click the downloaded setup file for the fingerprint reader and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

  4. Install requires the laptop to restart.
