PowerStore Alerts: DIMM State Failure

Summary: DIMM State alerts are triggered when DIMM is faulted, removed, inserted incorrectly, part number mismatch or if the software cannot retrieve DIMM's information.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

When Dell PowerStore encounters a problem, an error alert is generated to help identify the issue. This article explains the different possible causes and the relevant solutions for these error alerts. If your problem is not resolved despite the solution that is provided, check the technical support contact options.

NOTE: Cannot find the information you need? Let us know using the feedback form at the bottom of this article.

Cause

The cause for respective alerts has been explained in the Resolution section.

The DIMM alerts can be raised for NVMe expansion enclosure DIMMs and for Node DIMMs.

Resolution

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_FRU_STATE_FAILED
Alert Text Node's DIMM has faulted
Error Code (0x00309503)
Resolution

Cause

  • This alert is raised if the DIMM has failed.
  • Some DIMM errors may result in multiple alerts to be raised. For example, a failed DIMM may result in alerts for both a faulty DIMM and a failed node.

Solution

  • Contact Technical support to have the DIMM replaced.
  • See the Dell PowerStore Installation and Service Guide for guidelines to replace the faulty DIMM:
    • Base enclosure service procedures → Replace a DIMM for guidelines on Node DIMM failures.
    • NVMe expansion enclosure service procedures → Replace a DIMM for guidelines on NVMe Expansion DIMM failures.

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_FRU_STATE_DISCONNECTED
Alert Text Node's DIMM is disconnected
Error Code (0x00309504)
Resolution Cause
  • This may occur if the DIMM is physically removed, improperly seated or located in the wrong DIMM slot.

Solution

  • Avoid swapping DIMMs without approval from Dell support.
  • If the alert was raised following any maintenance activity, mention it when escalating to support.
  • Contact Technical support for further assistance so they can review the underlying cause of the error to determine the best course of action.

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_FRU_COMP_STATUS_UNEXPECTED
Alert Text Found an unexpected Node DIMM in slot %(dimm_index)
Error Code (0x0030B604)
Resolution

Cause
This may occur if a DIMM (dual inline memory module) has been inserted in a previously empty slot or DIMMs have been swapped between slots.
Solution

  • Avoid swapping DIMMs without approval from Dell support.
  • Contact Technical support for further assistance so they can review the underlying cause of the error to determine the best course of action.

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_FRU_COMP_STATUS_INCOMPATIBLE
Alert Text Node DIMM%(dimm_index) part number %(part_number) does not match with the expected part number %(expected_part_number) for this slot.
Error Code (0x0030b602)
Resolution

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_CE_STATE_CRITICAL
Alert Text Node's DIMM has been faulted due to excessive correctable errors.
Error Code (0x0030cd03)
Resolution

Cause

  • Starting with PowerStoreOS 3.0, DIMMs are monitored closely for correctable issues.
  • The alert indicates that a DIMM has above 400M Correctable Errors within the past 24 h, this marks the DIMM as failed and the affected node reboots.
When the node comes back up, System Manager starts the node in a degraded mode due to the faulted DIMM.
  • The node does not serve any I/O.

Solution

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_CE_STATE_WARNING
Alert Text Node's DIMM is reporting an elevated number of correctable errors, proactive action is recommended.
Error Code (0x0030cd02)
Resolution

Cause

  • Starting with PowerStoreOS 3.0, DIMMs are monitored closely for correctable issues.
  • The alert indicates that a DIMM has above 50,000 Correctable Errors within the past 24 h.
  • The node should continue operating as expected.

Solution

Alert ID XMS_DIMM_FRU_COMP_STATUS_UNIDENTIFIABLE
Alert Text Node DIMM%(dimm_index) resume is not readable by the software.
Error Code (0x0030b603)
Resolution Cause
This may occur if the software cannot retrieve the DIMMs (dual inline memory module) information, and the firmware has identified a hardware fault with the DIMM.
Solution
  • Contact Technical support to have the DIMM replaced.
  • See the Dell PowerStore Installation and Service Guide for guidelines to replace the faulty DIMM:
    • Base enclosure service procedures → Replace a dual inline memory module (DIMM) for guidelines on Node DIMM failures.
    • NVMe expansion enclosure service procedures → Replace a dual inline memory module (DIMM) for guidelines on NVMe Expansion DIMM failures.
