In order to gather needed information we need to log on to Unisphere manager on our VNXe. After we log in, we’re presented with the management GUI. The GUI will generate alert for failed components we can investigate further by viewing the system health. The system health screen shows the severity of the error as well as the problem component and description. Within the lower pane we see the component description area.
Here we need to make physical note of the serial number and part number as this will be needed when returning and ordering parts. Before you begin the replacement procedure be sure you have correctly identified the faulted part and that a replacement part is available. Refer to VNXe online help and official replacement procedures if necessary.
This procedure involves powering down the SPs when all the SPs are down all IO services stop and hosts lose access to the system once one or both SPs becomes available to the system IO services to the host will resume. Before performing this procedure you should disconnect all network shares and iSCSi virtual disks from each host to prevent data loss.
Once the system is fully powered up you can reconnect the host to these storage resources to protect your VNXe system from accidental data loss while you remove and replace components. From the dashboard choose perform service operations log in with your service password.
In the system components column put each service processor into service mode. Under service actions select enter service mode then execute service action. Wait at least 10 minutes while the SP enters service mode all system processes and services on the SP gradually stop to safely place the SP and service mode. All data services failover to the other SP if present and active. During failover you may lose access to Unisphere for several minutes until the failover is completed.
The storage processor fault LED will flash alternating amber and blue while the SP remains in service mode. Be sure to put both A and B into service mode. To ensure that all right cache memory is vaulted on the solid state disk using battery backup power, allow the storage processors to power off completely by waiting 60 seconds after you unplug the power cables. Make sure no LEDs on either SP are lit before continuing.
Before you service a storage system gather together any SD kit and all materials you will need. Unplug the power cord from each module in the faulted enclosure. Label and remove all cable connections from the module to be replaced. On the front of the system, if not already open, open the console to access the front bezel. If the bezel is locked insert the key that shipped with your enclosure into the bezel lock and turn it to release the lock.
Press the two latch buttons on the bezel surface to release the bezel from the cabinet. Pull the bezel off and put it on a clean static free surface. Caution. Do not remove components such as disks SPs or power cooling modules from the faulted enclosure before removing the chassis from the cabinet. Doing so greatly increases the risk of returning a component to the wrong slot in the replacement chassis which can result in data loss.
The enclosure is heavy and should be installed into a rack by 2 people. Avoid personal injury and/or damage to the equipment do not attempt to lift and install the enclosure into a rack without a mechanical lift and/or help from another person. Remove the four screws, two per side, that secure the front of the enclosure to the vertical channels of the cabinet and save the screws. With help from another person, slide the enclosure out of the cabinet and place it on a sturdy static-free work surface.
Lift the replacement enclosure and from the front of the rack slide the enclosure into the rails when the enclosure slides into the back of the cabinet the rear tabs on each rail insert into the two notches in the rear of the enclosure. The tabs secure and support the rear of the enclosure. If the enclosure does not slide all the way into the cabinet you may need to further loosen the screws that hold the rear of the rails in place and adjust the rails to allow the tabs to fit into the notches.
Once the enclosure is completely seated into the rear tabs, tighten the screws, two in each rail, that secure the rails to the channels to help into a correct placement in the enclosure transfer one component at a time. Transfer the SP assembly from the A side first. Remove the service processor assembly.
Locate the two orange release levers on the bottom rear of the SP assembly. On each lever squeeze the latch knobs together to release the latches then pull the latches outward. Pull out the latches until they are fully extended and the SP assembly is released from the enclosure.
Use the latches to partially slide the assembly from its enclosure and then use both hands to support the assembly and draw it completely out of the DPE. Install the service processor assembly. Slide the SP assembly back into the replacement enclosure until it engages the enclosure and the latches start to close. Push the latch knobs into the SP assembly to seat and secure it in the enclosure.
An audible click indicates the latches are in place. The latch assemblies include a yellow warning marker if the marker is visible the latch is not fully closed. Transferring disks. Start with the disk or disk filler module in slot 0 the leftmost slot. Transfer disk and any modules one at a time from the faulted enclosure to the replacement enclosure.
Make sure to transfer the disk and disk filler modules into the same slots and the replacement enclosure that they occupied in the faulted enclosure. Installing disks out of the original order results in data unavailability and possible data loss. On the faulted enclosure, pull up the latch on the disk or disk filler module.
Slowly pull the disk or disk filler module from its slot. On the replacement enclosure, locate the slot with the same number as the slot from which you removed the disk or disk filler module. Align the disk or disk filler module with the guides in the slot. The latch on the disk or disk filler module begins to rotate downward when its tabs and meet the enclosure chassis.
Push the handle down to engage the latch. After the latches engage, push firmly on the bottom of the disk or disk filler module to verify that the disk or disk filler module is properly seated. On each SP assembly plug each front end I/O cable into the I/O module port from which you removed it. Plug each SAS cable to the SP assembly back end port from which it was removed. Reconnect the LAN cables to the management port and front end connectors.
Reconnect the power cord to the power supply. Verify that the DPE power LED is lit and then no fault lights on the DPE component are lit. If the disk or SP assembly component displays a fault LED, try reseating the component. Reinstall and lock the front bezel the bezel is required for EMI compliance when the enclosure is powered up. Align the bezel with the enclosure. Gently push the bezel into place until it latches. Secure the bezel by turning the key in the lock once you have completely replaced the faulted module reboot the recently serviced SP.
In the system components column select the storage processor to reboot to reboot both A and B under service action select reboot then execute, service action. Note it may take several minutes for the system to complete its reboot. Refresh your browser or follow the on-screen instructions to bring the software out of service mode and restore full function to Unisphere. Verify that the new module is recognized by your system and operating correctly.
In Unisphere click view, system health. Select the DPE in the component list or graphical view. In the component list the replaced module should be marked with an OK status icon. In the graphical view the module is highlighted green. If the system health monitor shows the DPE is faulted contact your service provider.
Your system serial number is recorded on the system identification tag attached by a strap to the back of the DPE. Use wire cutters or a similar tool to cut the tag strap on the faulted DPE chassis. Use the wire tie included in your system replacement kit to attach the tag to the replacement chassis.
