How to Create a Local Windows 8 Account to use DDPE

DDPE software cannot be used when signed in to Windows 8 with a Microsoft account. Here's how to create a local account on initial setup, or convert to one later.

Dell Data Protection Encryption software can't operate when logged in with a Microsoft account. To use DDPE you need a local account.

To create a local account during initial setup, when prompted for an email address leave these fields blank. Instead click "Create a new account".

When prompted to create a new Microsoft account leave all fields blank. Instead, click "Sign in without a Microsoft account". Enter the user name, password, and password hint you want to use to create the local account.

If you've already logged in with a Microsoft account, you can convert it to a local account. On the Start screen type "your account", the select your account settings. Click "Disconnect".

Enter the password for your Microsoft account, then enter the user name, password, and password hint you want to use with the local account. Click "Sign out and finish", then log back in using your local account user name and password.
