This video shows how to replace the optical drive on an XPS 8950. Before you begin, power off the system and disconnect all attached peripherals ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the system.
To begin loosen the captive screw, this secures a left side cover latch, then pull in the latch to release the cover from the chassis, holding the left side cover firmly on both sides, lift the left side cover from the chassis, place the computer on its side to remove the optical drive, disconnect the power and data cables from the optical drive.
Press down on the release tab and slide the optical drive through the front of your computer. Now remove the optical drive bracket from the optical drive eject the optical drive by inserting an optical drive opening tool into the optical drive.
Eject to using a plastic scribe gently push the optical drive bezel away to remove the tabs from the slots on the optical drive. To install the new optical drive place the optical drive vesel on the optical drive and snap it into place.
Replace the optical drive bracket by inserting the alignment pins on the bracket into the optical drive. Next insert and push the optical drive through the slot on the front of your computer, then connect the power and data cables to the optical drive.
Now place a computer in an upright position, holding the left side cover firmly on both sides, place the bottom edge of the left side cover into the chassis and press the left side cover into place.
