This video provides detailed instructions on how to replace the memory module on an Inspiron 16 5640. It covers entering Service Mode, safely removing and installing memory modules, and reassembling the laptop.
In this video, we will demonstrate how to replace the memory module on an Inspiron 16 5640. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Always use ESD protection when working inside the computer, and disconnect all attached peripherals. To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, then press the power button. The computer will boot up, displaying the Owner Tag information. Press any key to proceed, and the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down.
To begin, loosen the two captive screws and remove the six screws securing the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Use a plastic scribe to open the base cover, starting from the recesses near the hinges, and continue prying along the sides to release and remove it. Lift and hold the Mylar sheet in place to access the memory module, and gently pull the retention clips away from the module until it pops up slightly. Hold the module by the edges and carefully remove it from the memory-module slot on the system board. Repeat these steps to remove the second memory module, if installed.
To install the memory module, lift and hold the Mylar sheet in place to access the memory module slot. Carefully align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the slot on the system board and slide it in at an angle. Hold the memory module by the edges and gently press down until the retention clips click into place. Repeat these steps for any additional memory module that you wish to install.
Align the base cover with the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and snap it into place. Tighten the two captive screws, and then replace the six screws to secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Once the computer is fully assembled, connect the power adapter, press the power button to turn on the computer, and exit Service Mode. Please note, the computer will only power on if the power adapter is connected. For more information about the Inspiron 16 5640, visit Dell.com/Support.
