This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the wireless card on an Inspiron 16 5640. It includes detailed guidance on entering Service Mode, safely removing and installing the wireless card, and reassembling the laptop.
In this video, we will demonstrate how to replace the wireless card on an Inspiron 16 5640. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Always use ESD protection when working inside the computer, and disconnect all attached peripherals. To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, then press the power button. The computer will boot up, displaying the Owner Tag information. Press any key to proceed, and the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down. To begin, loosen the two captive screws and remove the six screws securing the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Use a plastic scribe to open the base cover, starting from the recesses near the hinges, and continue prying along the sides to release and remove it.
Remove the screw that secures the wireless-card bracket and the wireless card to the system board. Lift the bracket off the wireless card and disconnect the wireless-antenna cables from the connectors on the card. Then, slide and remove the wireless card from its slot on the system board.
To install the wireless card, connect the white antenna cable to the main connector marked with a white triangle. Similarly, connect the black antenna cable to the auxiliary connector marked with a black triangle. Align the notch of the wireless card with the tab of its slot on the system board, and slide the card in at an angle. Align and place the wireless-card bracket on the system board, and replace the screw that secures the bracket and the wireless card to the system board.
Align the base cover with the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and snap it into place. Tighten the two captive screws, and then replace the six screws to secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Once the computer is fully assembled, connect the power adapter, press the power button to turn on the computer, and exit Service Mode. Please note, the computer will only power on if the power adapter is connected. For more information about the Inspiron 16 5640, visit Dell.com/Support.
