MD3800 FailBack to preferred controller after SAN failure don't work.

hello,
I have a problem on a PowerEdge MD3800 (FW 08.25.08.60) with two virtual group configured on the same controller as preferred path ( I think it is an uncorrect config.) anyway the problem in the following:
After a restored failure on the SAN caused by a faulted SFP, trying to restore the preferred path of one VG, it start the operation but after fiew minutes the storage come back at the previous state with the warning "Virtual Disk Not On Preferred Path".
I have verified all the connections between servers node (HBA status etc) / SAN switches / storage and all seems work fine.
May be that the storage make some periodical performance check so to go balancing the load on all two controllers?
Thanks in advance to who would help me.

Hello Charles,

thanks for your answer.

all steps in the suggested article was done, may be that the analysis on the FC connections isn't accurate  but, I'm not on site that is not easy reaceable by me. Anyway want to underlining that both the controllers are working as follow:
DG_A (preferred path CTRL0) -> CTRL0
DG_B (preferred path CTRL0) ->CTRL1 *Virtual Disk Not On Preferred Path.

Can I exlude a ctrl related problem?

May be an issue caused from the FW?

Thanks in advance

Hello Giuseppe,

Are you still in warranty you can call support directly and an engineer can do a remote session with you?

The forum is not set up for direct engagement remote session.

If not we can try to get a look at the logs.

Hello Giuseppe,

Try rescan storage adapters from all server nodes.

If only one is missing paths then you know to focus on something related to that server, if all of them do not see one of the controllers then you would know to focus on the controller, fabric, etc.

Once you know all the servers have paths to both controllers then redistribute virtual disks.

Hello Charles,

There's a specific command to rescan?

#multipath -ll Is enough?

Thanks

One more question,

Which difference between "Redistribute Virtual Disks" and "restore preferred Path"?

Hello,

for the command to rescan, it depend, what is the OS installed on the nodes?

Redistribute virtual disks or restore preferred path are the same thing.

Hello Giuseppe,

Below I have an action plan that should help out.

• Plan of action:

○ All hosts have connections to storage on both controllers

○ One of the volumes is still running on RC0 where the rest are on RC1

○ The volume on RC0 still is owned by host group "S-EXT_HG_GLOBAL"

○ This implies that there is possible misconfiguration on the other hosts

○ The fail overs began with an ALUA failover

§ This is where the OS determines that the alt path to the data is better for some reason

○ The fact that the volume has not failed back over yet generally means that MPIO is not configured correctly on all hosts

○ Due to your comment about "#multipath -ll Is enough?", we will assume below that you have a Linux based OS

§ VMware is not the same steps

○ For some reason all virtual disks are configured to run on RC0

§ This is normally found by Linux users that did not install MPIO so changed it to all run on 1 controller

§ See below steps to make sure MPIO is installed and working so the volumes can be distributed evenly for better controller performance

• Steps to help resolve

a. Update controllers to latest FW

i. https://dell.to/46OGcW8

b. Update HDDs to 2S24

i. https://dell.to/46PrPkh

c. Verify MPIO is configured to best practices (assuming Linux Based)

i. Example multipath.conf is @ https://dell.to/46T1JNg

ii. Correct as needed to match for all hosts

d. Evenly assign the volumes amongst the controllers

i. Open MDSM to Storage & Copy Services

ii. Open the disk group to see the volumes

iii. Right click on first volume

iv. Change -> Ownership/Preferred Path

v. Confirm it is on 0 or 1

vi. Repeat process on next volume, but change it to the alternate controller

vii. Repeat for the other 6 volumes verifying or changing so that each volume is assigned to an alternating controller

1. Should end up with 4 on each controller

e. Redistribute the volumes if needed

i. Right click on a volume

ii. Advanced -> Redistribute Virtual Disks…

f. Monitor for a couple days

Hello Carles,

I seems to understanding that the core of the action is the firmware upgrade, so I need to plan the activity with the systems management team, it isn't a short time because a very complex environment. I'll feedback you later.

Many thanks
