windows11 update

I have  Dell Inspiron 15 5584.

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8265U CPU @ 1.60GHz   1.80 GHz
Installed RAM 8,00 GB (7,87 GB usable)
Device ID E66E7CDE-B42B-41D9-AE52-AD7F58D30103
Product ID 00330-80000-00000-AA958
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 22H2
Installed on ‎13/‎06/‎2023
OS build 22621.1635
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22641.1000.0

The above-mentioned date of Windows 11 installation is after re-setting the computer, but I have been on Windows 11 through Windows update since it appeared. The problem now is that after installing the cumulative update I receive a message that something went wrong and that I should not worry about because the changes will be undone. This happened now for the two last cumulative updates.

Is this related to my computer hardware not being more capable to receive updates of windows? What shall I do?

Thank you.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles.
But I am glad you managed to solve the issue with the updates.

You can add a second memory stick, either buying it from Dell for a hefty price (Dell memoria aggiornamento - 16 GB - 2RX8 DDR4 SODIMM 3200 MHz | Dell Italia) or you can have it for much cheaper from Amazon, or Crucial itself. I would go with Amazon or Crucial, or any store of your choosing offering the following model by Crucial: CT16G4SFRA32A

This way you will have 24GB, your experience will undoubtedly improve, as 8GB is way too little for nowadays needs. 16GB would be great, 24GB will be even better.
Just so you know, RAM will continue to work on Dual Channel up to 16GB (8GB on each module), the remaining 8GB on the new module will work on single channel. The difference between single and dual channel is merely theoretical on a laptop, so you don't need to even think about it.

Installing the new module is very easy, you can find the official instructions on the service manual, pp. 26ff. It's a very easy procedure.

For any question just @ me :)

@iskandar basal
Yes, you can add an NVMe SSD, and you can definitely go beyond 512GB if you wish to (never mind what the old specifications say, you can go up to 4TB as long as it is a single-sided drive).

The best option would be to get rid of the old HDD and replace it with the new NVMe SSD altogether: boot time would become much shorter, and any casual access to the drive wouldn't slow down the OS.
While if you keep it as secondary disk, Windows will keep accessing it from time to time, causing random slow downs and possibly some stuttering.
You can clone the content of your HDD onto the new SSD drive, this way you won't even need to reinstall Windows and all the apps/personal files you have on the drive.

If you decide to re-image your laptop, don't forget to access the BIOS (press F2 when you turn on the laptop) and change the SATA Operation to AHCI right before you install Windows, otherwise Windows won't detect the new NVMe drive. This passage won't be needed if you decide to clone the old HDD onto it.

A good model for your laptop would be the Crucial P3, any size you want.
It's cheap but very reliable, not the fastest on the market but it's a Gen 3.0 just like your laptop's interface, so it goes as fast as your laptop will allow any SSD to go.
Otherwise if you want a faster model that you will be able to keep as secondary drive on a future laptop too, you can choose a Gen 4.0 NVMe like the P3 PLUS or better yet the P5 PLUS

Not in the same slot, as you correctly pointed out it wouldn't fit, two completely different interfaces.
What I mean by "replacing it" is to simply remove it and install the new NVMe SSD as the only storage drive.
This image is exactly what your laptop should look like once you pop the back cover: on the left-hand side you'll find the SATA3 HDD you need to remove, on the right-hand side underneath the metal plate (heatsink) you'll find the NVMe m.2 slot where you are going to install the new NVMe SSD.

There are several ways to clone a drive onto a new one, the easiest way would be to temporarily place your new NVMe SSD inside a USB external enclosure like this one (you can look for a cheaper one, just make sure it's NVMe compatible otherwise it won't work), connect it to your laptop as you would do with any external USB drive, and then start the cloning procedure using the software provided with your new NVMe SSD drive.

If you eventually decided to buy a Crucial NVMe SSD, it should come with a tool called Acronis True Image (if memory serves me right) which extremely intuitive to use.

Once you have successfully cloned your old drive to the new SSD, proceed with removing the HDD and installing the new SSD.
You can find the instructions on the service manual:
1. unplug the AC adatper;
2. remove the back cover (page 17ff.);
3. unplug and remove the battery (page 22ff.);
4. remove the HDD (page 43ff.);
5. install the new SSD (page 38ff.), the new one is a 2280 form factor, so you might have to adjust the adapter accordingly;
6. put everything back together and it should recognise the new drive right away, no need to change any BIOS setting.

It's extremely easy if you have already had some prior experience replacing computer hardware.
Be sure to discharge the static electricity from your body before you start; using gloves would be even better even if it's not strictly required with this kind of hardware, but if you are at ease with nitrile (best) or latex (good enough) gloves... you can't go wrong using them :)

If you need help with the cloning procedure, just let me know what tool is bundled with your new SSD, and I think I should be able to provide you with some pictures.

As far as I know they should all include a cloning tool (a download link to the software), I am not really sure why they are advertising a difference at all... Last P5 PLUS I received from Crucial had it.

Whenever your wrist is back in good shape, no hurry at all. If you need any help I am just a @ away :)

Hi @iskandar basal

I remember you having a similar issue before, which is quite uncommon after re-imaging a computer, it should have been fixed by now.

Your computer is perfectly capable of running W11, it respects every minimum requirement Microsft set, so that's not a problem.

Just to make sure: have you managed to install other cumulative updates in the past?
Is this the first time that you are having troubles installing cumulative updates after reinstalling Windows?

Could you write the code of the cumulative update(s) that failed to install?
It should read like KB5030xxx or KB5029xxx, or similar.

If this is the case, I would clear the Windows Update download cache and try to update again.
Open Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) > on the left you will find a column with different icons, select the last one that looks like a puzzle piece (#1 in the picture below) to open Services > then click on the 3 dots (#2 in the image) and select Open Services > look for Windows Update, right click on it and select STOP.

Now, open File Explorer (it looks like a yellow folder next to Start) > open your C: drive > navigate to Windows\Software Distribution folder > delete the whole content, anything you find inside. Then restart your computer and check for updates on Windows Update.

If this wasn't enough, I would try using Windows Update's very own trouble-shooter: right-click on Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Trouble-shooters > Windows Update.

Let me know if it helped!

@Tatolino Hi Tatolino. I noticed your reply to my issue only this morning. Thank you. Yes I have always updated my computer to the last cumulative update and all the other updates from windows. The above mentioned problem occured only since August and for the last two cumulative updates. However, I paused the updates for 5 weeks since the last one because I have an important commitment next week on 24th October. After that I will read carefully your instructions above and follow them and tell you what will happen. I also use the Diagnostics section at the Dell site and the support assistance app. Thank you.

@Tatolino Hi TATOLINO,

I have had a fracture of my right wrist, that's why I DELAYED MY RESPONSE. I HAVE CASTING NOW AND IT IS REALLY DIFFICULT TO WRITE USING ONE HAND ONLY.

FIRST I TRIED THE SOLUTION BY THE TASK MANAGER TO STOP THE WINDOWS UPDATE AS YOU INSTRUCTED ME BUT THE STOP KEY WAS GRAYED OFF. THEN I WENT TO THE FILE EXPLORER, TO THE WINDOWS DISTRIBUTION FOLDER. THERE ARE FIVE FOLDERS THERE AND I DID NOT KNOW  WHAT TO DELETE. THEN I DECIDED TO USE THE OTHER TROUBLE SHOOTRS TOOL. FORTUNATELY I SUCCEEDED. NOW HERE BELOW IS A SCREENSHOT OF THE LAST HISTORY OF WINDOWS UPDATE ON MY COMPUTER.

I'M SORRY, I HAVE DIFFICULTY TO SHOW THE SCREENSHOT HERE. HOWEVER I SUCCEEDED TO GET ALL THE LAST UPDATES FROM WINDOWS.

I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION BEFORE ENDING THIS CONVERSATION. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD RAM TO MY COMPUTER TO MAKE IT FASTER AS IT GOES TOO MUCH SLOW. I HAVE A SLOT OCCUPIED BY 8GB RAM AND THERE IS AN EMPTY SECOND SLOT. I PLAN TO BUY FROM DELL ACCESSORIES RELATED TO MY COMPUTER, A 16GB RAM AND ADD IT INTO THE EMPTY SECOND SLOT.

IS THIS POSSIBLE? WILL IT MAKE IT FASTER, AS IT IS REALLY SLOW?

THANK YOU SO MUCH

@Tatolino >Hi Tatolino. Thank you so much for your advice and instructions about the RAM. The Crucial product should be suitable. I have one more thing to ask about, the last thing, however it is not urgent. My computer has a hard desk of 2TB, and i think the computer works very slowly because of this. I know, not very sure however, there is another empty slot for an SSD to be added of 512GB, in addition to the current storage, if one wish to do so. Please, could you check if this is possible? Could you please give me instructions about the SSD model and how to install it? Thank you again for valuable help.

@Tatolino Hello, I would chose the beast option you suggest, that is to get rid of the old HDD and replace it with the new SSD you mentioned above. I would first clone the HHD onto the SSD new desk to avoid reinstalling windows. But does this mean that i should insert the SSD into the same position (slot) where the HDD is situated? Does the SSD fit there? Could you please send me a link to some video instructions of your trust from the web or from the DELL? If not a video a step by step guide will also be sufficient. I know i have been asking too much help questions, I'm sorry, but things are going well with your support and problems resolved. THANK YOU.

@Tatolino Hi. Now i'll be waiting untill my fracture heals, remove the cast, and then I'll follow your intructions in the above messages. I'll buy the models either the RAM or the SSD of the mentioned models and types.

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0CCN91GCY/ref=twister_B0CKRXFV6F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

the 2TB + Acronics. The other link of the crucial P5 does not mention Acronics:

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B098WKQRDL?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_QN2XP6ZK5S94V34BHEJC&th=1

The cloning process might need help. In the next future I'll tell you about my progress. Fractures of the wrist need at least one month to heal and an added period of exercise.

Thank you so much for support Tatolino.

@Tatolino HELLO, This is me after a long time. In reference to our past conversations, I'd like to tell you that I succeeded to update the memory in my computer to reach a 24GB RAM as mentioned above. First, and to simulate a good technician I bought this kit of precision tools:

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B09PR4Z21Q?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Then I bought the 16 GB RAM from Crucial:

https://it.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct16g4sfra32a

Following your instructions and the manual I succeeded to do everything by myself for the first time I try to open a computer.

Now I will think a little if to change the hard desk HDD by an SSD one or to wait and buy a new computer after sometime. In this case I will certainly need your help in the cloning process and removing and placing the hard desks. However, could you please send me a direct link from crucial (not amazon) about the P3 PLUS of 2TB size which you mentioned as the most suitable for my laptop velocity

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0B25ML2FH?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_CH71ANFY73V4RY1B9GZ7&th=1

I prefer to buy directly from Crucial as I did with the RAM. I think it is more secure material and transport.

Hi @iskandar basal
I am glad things worked out just fine :)
Here is the link to the model:
Crucial P3 Plus 2TB PCIe M.2 2280 SSD | CT2000P3PSSD8 | Crucial IT

It's a very good SSD, and you could always keep it as a secondary storage drive if you eventually decide to buy a new laptop!
Just make sure the new laptop has an extra NVMe 2280 m.2 slot, which is quite common on 15"+ laptops.

@Tatolino Hello Tatolino, How are you? Hope every thing is alright. Are you still available? I'm writing in the tail of a previous conversation in order to allow you to remember me. Finally I bought the P3 PLUS CRUCIAL SSD

https://it.crucial.com/ssd/p3-plus/ct2000p3pssd8

and I also bought the enclosure to perform the cloning process which I'll do as soon as possible.

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0BGS3NZ4C?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_3ZP0SCAAD9VJP485NCT3

Now the SSD came with Acronis true image for crucial. There is a user guide and a download app:

https://www.acronis.com/en-sg/promotion/crucialhd-download/

I still have to open the app and follow the instructions from the user guide to perform the cloning process. I think I should follow the instructions on page 66 of the user guide: Disk cloning and migration. Is this correct?

The enclosure came with a thermal silicone pad that I had to stick over the SSD after fixing it in the plastic inner frame and pushed the frame into the enclosure then after.

My question is: should I remove this thermal silicone pad before installing the SSD in it's slot in the computer.

Thank you so much Tatolino and hope you are still available at Dell community.
