XIO SQL Migration Question....

Hi

Is anyone able to advise of typical dedupe + compression rates I'm likely to see for a 3TB SQL Server?  I'm loathed to grant a 3TB LUN for this on the XIO at present.  Essentially what size LUN would I need to create on the XIO to accommodate the VM which is moving from a 3TB LUN on a VNX?

Appreciate this is a very open question, any KB articles would be appreciated.

Thanks

Christian

You should expect low dedupe rates on a single copy of a database, it goes up if you have multiple copies of the same database. Databases typically have higher compression rates. The recommendation is always to run the Mitrend tool to get a better idea of dedupe and compression benefits that XtremIO can provide for your environment.

To answer your question directly – you should still create a 3TB LUN if you are moving a 3TB LUN on VNX. You might end up consuming much less physical space on XtremIO because of thin provisioning, dedupe and compression benefits that XtremIO can provide. As mentioned above, running the Mitrend tool should help provide a good idea of what your space efficiency would be.
