XPS 9370 Fan Noise

When sitting idle (not seeing any heavy usage for anything in task manager over 10% anyway), how loud should these fans be? If I'm sitting here not even using it with the power adapter plugged in it seriously sounds like the fans are at full blast sometimes.. Seems like when I unplug the charger it slows down after a few seconds then eventually they turn off. Is this normal? It is kind of annoying for $1700 laptop to make so much noise just sitting idle, but if theres nothing to do about it, it is what it is. Thanks

Same issue as everyone here, and it's incredibly frustrating to see that this issue has been going on for months now with no official response from Dell. What terrible customer service. Prove me wrong Dell. Please.

I unboxed my laptop yesterday (Windows 10, i7, 16GB, 4k screen), and installed all of the software updates and BIOS update. Immediately, I noticed the fans were running audibly while the computer was sitting at idle under no real load. The fans also ran audibly while performing light web browsing. I bought this to run Photoshop while traveling around Europe, and I'm afraid to see how the thermal system will handle that load. All of yesterday, I had the laptop plugged in the whole time, so I'm curious to test today with only the heat load from the battery. Maybe that will be better? Regardless of whether or not the issue is isolated to charging operations, the noise is unacceptable for such a premium laptop. In addition, this issue came along with my carbon fiber keyboard cover being skewed during install so that the fingerprint reader was not properly lined up in the hole cutout, and wiring was visible from the right hinge while the left hinge was overly tight. I could see this as a one-off quality escape, I suppose, but seems like the attention to build quality isn't there either, even when you pay $2,000 for a laptop.

I left Dell several years ago believing the adage that DELL stands for "Doesn't Ever Last Long". I had thermal, performance, and minor build issues on my last XPS laptop several years ago. However, I watched plenty of positive raving reviews about this laptop claiming that this was the best 13-inch laptop on the market, and it convinced me think it was time for my negative perspective on Dell to change. Despite my hope for this laptop, I'm returning it with disappointment today primarily based on the fact that Dell has done NOTHING to fix this fan issue and hasn't acknowledged even this forum at all. That's not a company I would pay $2,000 to for a "top-of-the-line" laptop, and that also makes me worried that their thermal design isn't going to withstand the test of time. This is so disappointing because the laptop has so much potential to be fantastic, but it's the attention to detail that loses my business here.

Posting here, adding to the pile of other comments, hoping that Dell will step up to the plate and finally address this problem.

Thought I had this sussed after stopping the Dell tasks but the fan noise came back.  I've got the latest BIOS, latest drivers, and have adjusted the thermal to quiet and although it seemed to quiet the fans I have not left it that way (I should not have to trade performance and higher heat on a brand new laptop).

This laptop has been nothing but trouble from the get go. I have rebuilt from iso so not a Dell image and still task manager freezes the computer, it won't go to sleep (yes all my settings are correct), and this fan noise.  So much for buying the high end.

Just want to add that I to am having this problem, and can't understand why Dell isn't responding appropriately. The fan turns on with one tab open in Chrome or Firefox. And it's fairly loud. This is a 2k+ laptop. I wish I was still able to return. None of the BIOS updates or Dell Updates has done anything.

Turning it on the "quiet" profile makes the fan stop for a short time, and then it kicks back in (15 minutes).

This is just so bad.

sorry to hear you're past the point of returning, but your reply (all of them here) has convinced me that returning my xps and going back to Mac is a sound plan. i was really looking forward to this little thing. it's sick and shiny and tiny but stutters and clicks like it has pieces loose.

gross man just gross. i am disappoint

I've tried all the "tricks" here but nothing was usefull.
It's really hard to belive that a new computer with such parameters makes so much noice.

I waiting for dells response.. Cause for now i'm very disapointed.

Same issue here. This is just unacceptable for a device in this price range. Has anybody tried to get a full refund yet?

Just got mine, had the same loud fan issue (wouldnt stop when plugged into AC), updated BIOS to 1.2.1 and so far has been fairly quiet. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=Y385Y&lwp=rt

I did have the fan rattling noise earlier, may have to send back if truly a hardware issue

Just received mine, same issue here. I get a very loud fan noise without any heavy usage. This is very annoying.  Contacted Dell, they advised me to install the latest Bios and drivers. Already did that. No big improvement.

quite a disappointment.

I have also received mine a few days ago, it is such a great build but unfortunately the only thing that I noticed was the VERY loud and grinding fan noise at times (totally unpredictable, I can't think of a pattern) ... on battery or when it's charging .. which was just an absolute disappointment for a laptop in that price range, replacing an old and beautiful Lenovo X1 Carbon for me that was very quiet.

I have involved Dell Support whose only answer was to check my BIOS version (1.2.1 was supposed to fix this fan noise but I am on it) and ask me to install Power manager and set it to Quiet; which obviously will reduce my laptop's performance.

That all looks like a recall to me, Dell.

Same here. Updating to the newest BIOS didn't help. If I plug in my power supply the fan starts blowing annoyingly loud. Dell, please fix...

Hi all,

I observed similar issues with my new XPS 13 (9370) and improved it dramatically (lower idle CPU load)) on my side by deactivating the Service: "Intel(R) Management and Security Application Local Management Service" sounds similar if you have setup your System with German language.

I just disabled it by setting the startup type to "Disabled" within the services section, you can reach that by typing "services" in "Search programs and files" within Windows start menu.
As a temporally test, you can just quit the lms.exe within Task Manager.

As far as I was able to find out, this service brings no real benefit on private machines.

I hope, that this improves your situation as well.

On the other hand, Dell shall investigate on this topic, so that a premium Notebook fells premium without the need of own investigations and modifications to the standard configuration.

You are truly a legend!

Your Solution killed the fan noise totally, i mean entirely.

Without change the power mananger thermal , and without upgrade the bios,

Simply disable this service, wow, 9370 now is like horse

Nailed it!

Well done. I will now consider buying a 9370 since it looks like this was an Intel problem to begin with. But not really impressed with the lack of a Dell response in this community space.
