XPS 17 9700, turns itself on while in lid is closed

My new XPS 17 has a tendency to turn on while the lid is closed. This can happen while placed on my desktop or in my backpack. It is especially annoying when it happens in my backpack. It wil get very very hot, almost to the point where I cant touch it, and also the battery will drain.

It can stay on until the battery has been all drained. About halft of the time when I open the lid it will display a Blue Screen of death.

It doesn't always turn on while closed, I would say a couple of times each week.

To investigate, I've tried to check if it actually shuts down. Today I closed the lid, listened for a while until all fans where turned completely off, so I am pretty sure the labtop had shut itself down. But when I came home an hour late the machine was running hot in my backpack.

Any idea how to stop this behavior?

This is discussed in the sticky, "FAQ XPS Laptops". Open, "FAQ Modern Standby". All modern Dell laptops must use the Modern Standby.

Shutdown /s /t 000

Each officer would state their name, rank and corresponding code:
1."Destruct sequence 1, code 1-1 A."
2."Destruct sequence 2, code 1-1 A-2B."
3."Destruct sequence 3, code 1 B-2B-3."

The computer would then reply:

The countdown begins
"Destruct sequence completed and engaged. Awaiting final code for one minute countdown."
The commanding officer would then state:
"Code zero zero zero. Destruct. Zero."
The computer would than activate red alert and respond:
"Destruct sequence is activated."

I'm not interested in fully shutting down my pc. I'm interested in a pc that sleeps when I close the lid. Like all modern laptops I've ever owned.

My XPS 9700 stays on when I shut the lid too. It will not turn off. I have to shut the computer down for it to stay off.

I have the same issue and after I read these comments here, looks like I cannot do anything to fix this issue. It is a almost 3k laptop and I could not even put it to sleep by closing the lid. Or the laptop battery is heating nuts and automatically shut down by itself when I am away from it for like only 30 minutes. On top of that, everytime this happens, I have to wait for its supportAssist to run in the background for another 20-30 minutes.... Last time I check, I bought a laptop and not auto heater lol

Yeah, I've had to live with this for more than a year. I think I'm done with Dell.

Have you been able to perform a systems diagnostics to check for hardware issues yet?  If not, please run Dell SupportAssist, make a note of any error messages encountered and post back.  If there are none, please run the ePSA testing by pressing F12 at startup and run the diagnostics.  If there are no error messages, then it could indicate either a software or driver issue.

I have the same issue...been dealing with Dell support for 2 months now, they came out and replaced my motherboard and I've talked to at least 6 technicians of various levels over about a dozen calls. Absolutely shocking service and device that I've spent thousands of dollars on, only for them to tell me "tough luck".

If anyone has this issue resolved, PLEASE post on how you did. I'm disgusted by Dell and will never purchase again.

you can switch it to use "s3 sleep" again - though I'm not sure how long this will last.

You can set your hibernate settings to come on a bit earlier too... only downside is it will take a while to get back to your desktop compared to sleep.

With s3 sleep enabled (may not be necessary), you can play with the USB-wake, Wifi driver power management, and hybrid-sleep settings. You'll want to do some Googling but once you get back power management settings there's a few things you can do like "disconnected standby". Basically not letting your computer wake for any reason without opening the lid.

But yeah... sounds like hardware to me lol, even though you've had it replaced 6 times apparently.

I had this issue with an XPS 9500 I bought last week. So when placed vertically on a stand, in a backpack or messenger bag… the lid would not close. It will easily open up. When it slightly opens up the laptop would turn on and heat up in my backpack/messenger bag. I found out the hard way when I heard the fans running and being extremely loud and inside my bag was just extremely hot… like really hot. Dell apparently is saying this is “normal” and does not affect the use but it absolutely does, especially if you travel a lot with it like I do. The funny thing is the person from technical support sent me this:

“I would also like to let you know that the hinge structure is fine tuned as to support the one handed open feature of the XPS 9500. The 15" panel is heavier, therefore you may feel that the hinge is loose. We are confident this will not impact any system feature for your daily usage.”

The thing is that not everyone has this issue. A military buddy has the same model with the same UHD panel and his closes just fine where mines didn’t. It’s a manufacturing consistency issue but Dell says otherwise.

I was going to get a 9700 but now I don’t know if I should if it has the same issue which seems like your model might. Place it vertically and see it the laptop stays closed in multiple vertical positions like as to putting it in a horizontal stand, messenger bag and book bag. Hopefully you figure it out.

I have to explicitly turn it off.  It won't sleep, it won't hibernate.  I've tried everything and can't get it to behave. Mine is xps 17 9700.  Fortunately I keep it plugged in most of the time (against Dell recommendation) because I don't want the battery to run down.  When I put it down I have to always turn it off completely even though it is supposed to turn off if I close the cover; it doesn't!  That issue and the sensitivity of the keyboard and lack of key travel drives me crazy.  I have finally put a keyboard plastic cover on it which works much better for me.  If it were a desktop I'd trash it and get a new one.

I wish someone could figure out what's wrong with the machine!

I have the XPS 9700 17 inch model. Shut it off, come back 12 hours later, the battery is down to zero, so, obviously, it has turned itself back on, and, the friggin fans run, even when all I'm doing is watching something on youtube. DWD. done with Dell.

I have the same problem. Wish I didn't buy it. Not to mention dozen other small problems I have. Support from Dell really bad. 3.5k euro laptop should perform better

@DELL-Chris M

The link to FAQ Modern Standby on the FAQ XPS Laptops page is dead.

Is there an updated link to this FAQ?
