XPS 15 9570, front LED, white/amber flashing

Hi,

I was reading this thread to find out about the flashing LED (at the front of the laptop, just under the keyboard in the middle) codes. I have 2 white and 7 amber which, according to that thread measn 'Replace LCD'. The screen on my laptop appears to be fine however I'm wondering what to do now.

I had the same problem with the flashing LED. For me the issue was gone after I disabled "Legacy Option ROMs" in BIOS settings.

Do I keep waiting for an answer in here or do I log it with Dell Support?

Hi @pauby

Thanks for getting in touch. That's very strange to hear of the error codes but no actual fault. Is it definitely 2 white and 7 amber that the sequence is flashing?

a) What pattern do you get if you try a diagnostic boot? (Hold down the Fn key and power on the system)
b) Have you tried updating the BIOS to the latest revision to see if that makes any difference. It can be downloaded here

c) If you run the LCD test, does it display without issue? (To run the LCD test, hold down the D key and power on the system. The LCD should cycle through a series of colours).

Hi Alan,

I've replied to your private message with details but put them here too for others.

I've since discovered that the laptop ONLY does this when it is connected to the TB16 dock. This is something I discovered during a trip and had to disconnect the dock.

The dock and the laptop are both updated to the latest firmware. And yes, it's 2 amber and 7 white that is being shown.

Do you still want me to perform these tests given my update?

I too can confirm similar experiences. When my XPS 9570 is connected via DisplayPort / TB3 cable, I will get these flashing lights. I have a video for logging this if ever needed, but all firmware updates are current, driver updates are current and I do not have any real issues with the screen, but the LED flashing persists.

@inventortechie thanks for adding to the thread. I replaced @pauby's motherboard for the flashing led issue and it resolved the issue for him. Depending on the circumstances of your fault and the troubleshooting you have carried out, you may also require the same.

Can you help me out with a few additional details please -

a) Is the led pattern exactly the same indicating an LCD fault?
b) Is there any damage to the displayport / TB3 ports on the XPS chassis?
c) Do you get the same symptoms if you connect the external device once the system is already powered on rather than having the device already connected and powering the system on?

I'll drop you a private message to get some tag details from you.

I just wanted to update this thread a little:

> I replaced @pauby's motherboard for the flashing led issue and it resolved the issue for him

The motherboard and LCD were replaced on my laptop at the same time - we don't know which one fixed the issue but the mainboard might not be the fault on it's own. But the new combination has certainly made things more stable with the TB16 dock (an issue I experienced was if power was lost to the dock, restoring it didn't restore all the USB / NIC / etc. connections - only video - and a laptop reboot was required to fix - this has now gone too).

And just to further add the new mainboard had to be replaced again as it caused a new issue with the GPU fan not spinning up correctly (the fan would start, stop, start , stop ...) - the fan was also replaced but that didn't resolve the issue on it's own so a new mainboard was put in.

Draw from those conclusions what you will but for me, while I appreciate this is a new model, the QA is clearly lacking, at least at this stage.

I don't keep an eye on this thread so if I can help please tag me.

Hi Alan, I'm having a similar issue with the XPS 15 (9570). Laptop got a bit hot, stalled and now nothing but 7 white and 2 Amber flashes. Holding D on startup brings colours up. Holding Fn doesn't seem to do anything. I've only had the laptop for a couple of months and not sure how to get it fixed. Best Regards, Steve

You need to start by calling Dell support - use the contact link at the bottom of this screen to find your local support number.

I had this issue with my XPS 9570, would get the 2 white / 7 amber flashing pattern on the bezel LED.

I never had any issues with my display, it would only appear when I plugged in my TB16 Dock, but my dual display was fine, and using the laptop standalone no dock was fine too, though would not flash the pattern, that only occured once plugged into the dock

Recently updated to the v1.6 BIOS, and this has corrected the issue.  I have no more error code flashing when I plug into my TB-16 Dock, though, the LED doesn't come on at all, I had thought it was supposed to be on solid white.  No matter, at least its no longer flashing at me all day long.

@katana55 are you still requiring support for the flashing leds on the front of the system? If so, can you drop me a private message with your service tag and contact details and I'll get it organised for you.

@Raidoloom thanks for getting in touch.

Can you confirm the flashing LED's only show that pattern once the system is disconnected to the TB16. If you use the system with the TB16 connected the system works without issue?

Does this happen regardless of whether you are running on battery or ac adaptor power?

Do you get any faults or error messages to go along with the flashing LED code?

I'll drop you a private message to get your tag details.

Even i'm facing the same issue on my Dell XPS 15 (9570):
The Battery charge LED light ( i.e. below the touchpad in the center) is blinking in the sequence: 2 Yellows and 7 whites.

My laptop restarted after the windows 10 update and now the light is continuously flashing.

@SeekerAnkit thanks for your contribution. That's strange that the issue happened only after the Windows update forced a restart.

a) Prior to this, was the laptop working fine, i.e no led error codes?
b) What version of the BIOS are you running?
c) If you flash the BIOS again, even to the latest version of 1.7.0, does the fault still remain?
d) If you run the epSA diagnostics, do you get any faults or error codes returned (To run the ePSA diags, hold down the Fn key and power on the system)
e) Do you have any external devices connected to the system i.e TB16, mouse keyboard etc?
f) Do you still get the same error code whether these devices are connected to the system or disconnected?
g) is there any damage to any of the ports?

I'll drop you a private message to get your tag details and location.
