XPS 13 9350 - no boot, three amber one white

XPS 13 9350

XPS 13 9350

I have an XPS 13 9350. It was used plugged in 24/7 and worked perfectly until the battery swelled up.

I've removed the battery and ever since I've been unable to boot it up: when plugged into A/C power the status LED blinks three amber-one white a few times, after which it goes solid amber, the CPU fan spins at max RPM for 2-3 seconds, then the system dies and the LED is off. If you unplug it and plug it back in the same thing happens.

Looking at https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000141206/a-reference-guide-to-the-xps-notebook-diagnostic-indicators#2014_Present this LED pattern indicates a CMOS battery issue. I've swapped the CMOS battery for a new one and tested it with a multimeter - it's all good. FWIW I also have the same behavior if I remove the CMOS battery completely.

I have two original Dell power adapters that both worked fine before, I've tried both of them now, same thing.

Any other things I can try?

How bad was the battery swelling?  It doesn't take much pressure to damage a system board, which is the likely cause of the problem.

It wasn't great, enough to visibly push up the touch pad IIRC. The laptop still ran though and I think it did power up once or twice after the battery removal, it died after another week or so.

The battery that swelled was supposedly genuine Dell, but had been replaced maybe three years earlier after the factory battery failed. When that happened I remember there were some issues running the laptop without a battery. Not sure if that's related in any way.
