Slow Wi-Fi Connection - (Dell XPS 15 7590 - Killer AX1650x - Windows 10 Pro)

Hello!

I have been having slow network issues on my laptop for about some weeks and while I usually wouldn't post a question, I seem to have come to a dead end in terms of my technical support knowledge.

It is a bit of an interesting scenario, at least to me, so I hope someone is able to help or at least shed some light on what might be happening. I hope to cover everything I have tried and will do my best to be as detailed as I can but please bear with me if I do miss something.

Background:
I purchased a Dell XPS 15 7590 in October 2019 and it was working well, no issues after a clean install of Windows 10 Pro.

Current System:
OS: Windows 10 Pro (Version 1903 - Built 18362.959)

Network card: Killer AX1650x network card
XPS 15 7590 ( With pro Support)

Problem:

Around Start of July 2020. I started experiencing really slow wi-fi speed.

The network itself is still broadcasting correctly as my other devices ARE still connected and working fine.

I have read a number of similar questions online about the same problem (the network card)

NOTE: Using the phone as router and data it's working fine, using the phone as router and streaming the wi-fi it's working really slow (i can't open a webpage or it's opening in about 10/15 minutes).

However the phone, tablet and other laptop are working fine and really fast with the wifi (5ms ping, 50mb download and 50mb in upload).

Only my dell laptop is working slow after some update.

And NOT ONLY with this wi-fi connection i had this problem.

So from what i can guess (reading also online in this community) the problem is the network card.

The strange part in all of this, it s that it stop to work since about some weeks. Before that, it was working as all the other device.

Current solution:

Using my phone Hotspot. Not a big deal when just browsing the web but when gaming or during video calls, it makes it very difficult and expensive.

Things I have tried and other information:

- Reboot modem/router

- Set computer DNS

  • Google, Cloudflare, OpenDNS

- Set static IP

- Reserve IP on router

- Flush DNS

- TCP/IP Reset

- Disabled 'Allow power management to turn off' network adapter

- Changed MIMO Power Save Mode - No SMPS

- Changed 802.11n/ac/ax Wireless mode to AC instead of AX (just to test)

- Disabled IPv6

- Drivers:

  • Uninstall network adapter and let Windows reinstall drivers
  • Reinstall older Killer drivers
  • Remove all Killer software (Control Center etc.)
  • Install drivers from Dell website
  • Rollback drivers to older drivers
  • Installed Intel AX200 drivers to see if that would work (from my understanding, hardware-wise, the same card)
  • Installed Driver from Intel (not from Killer website)

- Temporarily disable firewall

- Windows networking troubleshooters (I include these although they are garbage but someone is going to reply asking me to run it, so alas here it is)

Things I have considered but have tried to avoid for the time being:

I share internet with my landlords and it has never been an issue. The modem/router is right above me but has not moved.

- Connect via ethernet / USB

  • Same problem described: by using the phone as "USB ROUTER", date is working really fast, with wifi sharing is really slow.

What I want to know:

Ultimately, I just want to know if anyone can help me shed some light on what is going on.

If it is a router, network adapter, or straight up Windows issue. Once I can pinpoint that I can be on better footing.

Obviously I am happy to run further diagnostics and post more information or if anyone has an idea that I may have completely glossed over please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: Since the support is unhelpful (they make me tried some things that of course are not working) i order a Int.el Network Card as advice in other user's post. Will update my post and let everyone know if the Killer Network Card is the problem!

Having similar issues as you described, download is ok, upload is awful. same steps taken with alternative intel card, but only a wifi 5 version, wasn't sure if an intel ax200/201 would fix the issue as the killer is based on the same chipset, but getting to the point where support is asking about reinstalling windows [we've done enough diagnostics to know that won't work!]. was there any update to your problem?

What type of router are you using.  I had a similar issue using an N-router (wi-fi 4) against this network card.  I tried all the network card modifications without success.  I finally bought a netgear nighthawk ac 2300 (wi-fi 5) and solved the issue.  I know these routers claim to be backwards compatible or forward compatible but it may not be the case.  But before buying a new router and if have access to, check to see how the network card works on either an AC or AX (wi-fi 6) supported router.  You might be surprised what you find.

@Matteo Terzi  were you (or Dell) able to resolve the issue, eventually?

I have the exact same problem (Dell XPS 15 7590, Killer AX1650x, Windows 10 Pro). I see upload speeds of 0.1 GBit/s, which is of course just ridiculous.

Interestingly, this seems to be a Windows / middleware problem. Running a speed test on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) works just fine for download AND upload.

@DELL-Cares  What should I do? Upgrading the router (as mentioned in the comments) is not possible for me (In addition, this happens with MULTIPLE routers... )

Try to change the network wifi card (for most of the people solved the problem) or try with a VPN (for me also worked, and i still don't know why).

Anyway the dell support is completely unhelpful and i don't know why.. they have great product but 0 support (in case your laptop is broken you are  or you probably wait 1 year to have it back).

This why probably i will get a Mac Book

Hope you will solve your problem

I had the same problem, and nothing (re-installing drivers, upgrading/downgrading Windows 10, using different Killer drivers, ...) helped... until today!

I'm happy to report that the issue has been fixed!

What I did:

1. I removed the Killer software using Killer's own uninstaller (https://support.killernetworking.com/download/killer-uninstaller/)

2. I uninstalled the Killer network card using Windows's Device Manager (check "Delete the driver software for this device"). My hope was that this resets the driver to Windows own driver, which was apparently successful (after a reboot)

I was having really poor wifi connection like a lot of people with the killer 1650 wifi card and finally solved my problem! I followed the previous advice and I uninstalled the killer software with their own uninstaller software. I don't have the best wifi connection in my house, but just this took my wifi from 9Mbps to 52Mbps. I restarted the computer and didn't even need to uninstall the network adaptor through the device manager like the previous person.

Thank you @losdanielos
I followed both steps (both were required in my case) and the problem was solved!

If you guys cared, you would allow customers to uninstall Killer software.  As of now, users are forbidden to remove killer software and drivers from their PC.  Yes, you can uninstall it, but next time you reboot, that crappy software will be installed again.

You can go into services and disable the killer drivers and that works, but you are required to have Killer on your PC/

Find the killer control center uninstall tool and delete every aspect of it. Your download speed will go from 50kb to 150mb, I have now surpassed dell support in all aspects.
