Fans constantly starting and stopping after BIOS update - XPS 9500

Updated the BIOS yesterday to 1.6.1. Fan noise has never been an issue with this machine except under heavy load, and even then it's not excessive. But now, the fans constantly start every 8-10 seconds, run for 1-3 seconds, stop, and then start again after 8-10 seconds etc. even while idle.

Is anyone else having this issue? Should I just roll back BIOS?

Hours on the phone with Dell support, BIOS can't be downgraded. The fans make a computer I loved 24 hours ago absolutely unusable. This is going back to Dell, and I'm going back to buying Lenovo.

To ensure the security of your information, I'd suggest that you delete the post containing any Dell centric information & send us a private/direct message.

I don't understand what you're saying. How is "dell centric information" compromising the security of my information? This is a Dell message board - shouldn't it exclusively contain Dell information?

I have this issue too. Once I upgraded to BIOS 1.6.1 the fans kick on all the time even at idle. This issue is frustrating and I hope there's an update to address this soon. At least give us something to let us downgrade the BIOS to a version that doesn't have an issue.

Is yours one of the XPS-15 (9500) models with a dedicated Nvidia GPU on-board?

Sounds like the fan-profiles are a bit glitched in the new BIOS. We will report it to engineering.

There is often Intel-ME and micro-controller prerequisites, so it's usually better to just "go forward" on BIOS updates.

This might take some time. As a work-around, you might want to try running SpeedFan for a while.

Mine has an Nvidia GPU. I'll look into speedfan, thanks for the recommendation. Also, when you say this "may take some time", do you have any rough guess of how long it might take to address this?

Hi, I'm wondering if you have fans set to "Quiet" in Thermal Management? That was my setting before the BIOS upgrade, and it lived up to its name, with fans only audible under load, but then as mentioned after BIOS upgrade this behavior changed dramatically. However, I've found that changing fans to "Optimized" now reduces fan noise a lot. So at least in my case, it seems the BIOS upgrade made the quiet setting very load but perhaps didn't affect the optimized setting.

@Tesla1856 Yes this a new XPS 15 9500 with Nvidia GPU. I'm glad to hear that this will be reported to the engineering team. @maxlucy I did have my thermal profile set to Quiet. Changing the profile to Optimized does seem like it helps with the fans constantly spooling up but does not completely fix the issue. @DELL-Cares I don't require technical support since there's nothing I can do on my end to fix this issue. It sounds like it will require Dell engineering to build a new BIOS.

After the BIOS update I had the same issue. Then changed the fan settings in Dell power manager. Even on the Cool setting my laptop is more loud than ever before. What is this? I can't even hear the people talking in a meeting. Is there a way to go back to an older BIOS version or get it fixed?

Setting fans to Optimized or even Ultra Performance seems to be much quieter than the Quiet setting after this BIOS update. However, even at those setting the fans still run much more than before. And performance under load is noticeably worse.

I have the latest (BIOS 1.6.1), i7, Nvidia GPU, and there is erratic behavior across all thermal profiles. Quiet profile does not reduce fan speed or noise; on the contrary, it is instantly louder than the Optimized or the Ultra Performance profiles. Like you, fans also keep turning themselves on and off for no apparent reason -- especially under the Quiet and Optimized profiles. Ultra Performance has the opposite effect; fans kick in only after the CPU temperature reaches a scorching 100C and then throttling. This erratic behavior can be replicated under the BIOS settings or using the Dell Power Management application, so it's not a Windows issue.

I have the exact same issue on my prior and current XPS 9500. I want to show both fan (red and green) behavior with an screen shot. While I taking this screen shot computer was on idle. Dell please solve this problem. It exists since bios update 1.4.1, we are at 1.7.1 and it is still happening.
