XPS 8930, monitors blackout mid-session
Hello all,
I have a bit of a problem with a new (Bought Oct 2019) XPS 8930 Special Edition PC.
Problem:
After a few hours of normal window use, the displays (2) suddenly black out and although it appears the computer is still running, it is not possible to recover visual displays (and thus save work).
Plugging/unplugging monitors does nothing, neither does power cycles.
Hard reset/restart does fix the problem but means losing unsaved work.
The computer is used mainly for heavy excel work and trading platform. No 3D.
Shortest time between windows start and blackout : 1 hour
Longest time start and blackout : 1 day
Current Setup:
- Two displays connected into dedicated graphics card port (RTX 2060)
- Monitor 1: Samsung CHG90 - A large (49") wide-screen display plugged into DP
- Monitor 2: Standard 24" plugged into HDMI
- Monitor 1 doesn't have daisy chain capabilities
- Nvidia drivers are up to date
- Refresh rates of both monitors has been set to 59Hz
- Onboard graphics appear disabled
Top suspect is the graphics card but I'm running out of ideas.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

If you suspect the graphics card, you could remove it and connect your monitors to the Intel integrated graphics.

I have an 8930 that is about 18 months old. I have had this problem from day 1. Dell replaced my MB once and my GPU 3 times. Nothing has been resolved. I still have the problem. I have given up trying to find a fix. Let me know if you ever get a fix.
Thanks

One more thingy... What PSU is in this system, 460W or 850W?
Your video card may need the 850W PSU which is an optional upgrade on the XPS 8930 SE because the card draws 160W and I see recommendations for minimum of a 500W PSU with the RTX 2060.

Are all the fans working?
Agree with @Vic384 - physically remove the add-in video card and connect a monitor to an onboard Intel HD Graphics port. But I don't know if you can run 2 monitors with the onboard graphics at same time.
And/or install something like Speccy (free) and set it up so when you minimize it taskbar shows GPU temp on the icon, with mouse-over popup enabled to show CPU and HDD temps.
Keep an eye on the icon and watch for possible high temps. HWMonitor (free) will monitor GPU temp and GPU fan speed but it doesn't minimize to the taskbar like Speecy so it's not as convenient.
Also look in Windows Event Viewer to see if there are any logged errors around the time of a blackout. That info might point you in the right direction, if it's not an issue with the GPU.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
We've been able to "resolve" the problem temporarily by leaving a remote agent on the desktop and login remotely when the screen blacks out. It's not the prettiest solution but at least it lets us save work.
On the hardware front, we'll be testing the various solutions that were offered in this thread.
I shall update if anything concrete comes of it.
Thanks again for taking the time.
Regards.

(RTX 2060)
what PSU do you have.????
not listed in first post, (but now we can guess, no?)
and the remote in is good, test, i run headless here too, using ANYDESK(tm) free.
the swing out PSU options are 2.
but page one shows.
Your tower can support up to 225W full size graphics cards (ouch) this is page one not your $1300 page.
in electroncs power is first (and clean), dell sales thanks its a side show or of little value, by not showing options
RTX 2060
ok on the RTX 2060, the sales pages shows weak PSU with stated price and shows, $50 more for the 850watt
they kept the price low and FAILED HARD.

Was this issue ever resolved? I am having the same issue with my Dell XPS 8930 with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card that came with it. I've been having the issue for a long time and thought it was a problem with the monitor. I just replaced the monitor and the issue remains.

bn1029,
No, it has not been resolved.
I have pretty much given up. Started doing this from day one. Dell put in a new MB. Dell replaced the GPU 3X. I put in a new PSU. Removed my GTX-1070. Replace RAM (was getting errors). Ran with onboard graphics for months. Tried a different new monitor. Nothing helped.
I did a clean install of Win 10 a few months ago and wasn't having any problems for a while. so I put my GTX 1070 back in.
Did a clean install of WIN 11 on the 10-6. It's worse than ever. It's gone black 3 times in the last
hour. I can't believe this can't be fixed.

@bn1029 - Have you run the diagnostics from F12 menu?
Any errors logged in Windows Event Viewer around time it goes black?
Have you tried removing the GTX 1080 and testing when using onboard video?
Try disabling the in-game overlay setting in the Settings menu in the GeForce Experience app if that's running in background. And @spotteddog you should try disabling that setting too...

@RoHe - I haven't seen the problem (yet) using onboard video; however, that would defeat the purpose of having a GeForce card on the system. I did try disabling the in-game overlay setting, no luck. I just tried to go to YouTube in Chrome. The Chrome window turned black first and shortly after the entire screen turned black and the computer rebooted. The error in the Event Viewer (under System) reads "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xffffc0fbfdae62fc, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff80086ceacdc, 0x0000000000000002). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: a3d6e367-2362-4332-995a-2b767832f69d."
Thanks for your time!

0x00000050 is a memory error. Run the diagnostics from the F12 menu.
You can also run WhoCrashed (free) to see if it will help identify the problem captured by the .dmp file.
If you don't see the problem when using onboard video, that might suggest there's an issue with the RAM on the video card... Got a spare x16 video card you can take for a test?
