XPS 8700, boot issue, error message 0xc0000098

Dell XPS 8700 with the i7-4790. Good specs for gaming and upgradable still. First problem in at least over 5 years. Now getting error message 0xc0000098 and it won’t boot into Windows 10 anymore. 🤦‍

Thank you for any help you can give. I already tried scans, diagnostics, etc.  The ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment says all is good?

when PC is able to POST (can show and finish Dell logo screen) but can not boot into Windows, there are two schools of thoughts of a good remedy.  One school is into recovery repair.  the other is into a quick surgical cut of Godian knot by doing a clean install of latest Win 10 (and wipe the hdd/lose all old data).  if you have time to ponder and play around and enjoy that sort of things then the first school is more appealing.  if you just want to get it over with and do not mind starting w a clean slate then the second way is simple and fast.

This page may help and also this one. It could be a BCD problem and the second link has the specific procedure for correcting the problem. And lastly this video may help as well.

Windows recovery is often unsuccessful.  not saying it is always hopeless.  you can try to pay for a repair service but no promise either.  if I were you I would use a spare hdd w clean OS to access old hdd and retrieve data (files) and then wipe the old hdd losing program and settings only.

Re: I can recover everything that was on the one I have before the error?

if it is photos and videos they are likely still on the old hdd which you can recover.  word documents too.  but not everything.  you will have to reinstall games etc.

things happen and it may or may not have to do with internet sites you visit. do not blame yourself.  Despite the technical advances in computer Windows can still be messed up easily.  Perhaps that is why MS can find excuse to write more security patches and stay in business.

Re: Do you know if Norton 360, if I can find how to get it back on, would be any help. I thought it would protect the computer from stuff like this?

I think Norton is over rated and their claim is also to get you keep on paying them to help them stay in business.  They help when you download unsafe files but now Windows 10 does that too.  As long as you are not downloading strange stuff all the time you do not have to rely on Norton which always has a sky is falling and virus is raining down on earth world view.

you too.  ty.

I think I goofed it up 🤦‍ .  I have been trying to repair and boot for so long, I am not sure what day it is ‍ .  The error 0xc0000098 mysteriously appeared one morning and I have been trying many scans, boots, etc from google and uTube.  Nothing would boot even with the recovery? Windows 10 DVD made on the Windows site.

Since the option to upgrade Windows did not work, I found steps to try the other option.  That worked but my computer screen is missing everything , including files, games, Norton, Steam, etc.

Is there anyway to reverse the last steps I took to recover how my computer was earlier in the week, to return it to the way it was after over 5 years.  If I cant fix it, can a computer repair place fix it 🤯?  Please kill me, if not.

So if I buy an extra Hard drive, but Windows 10 on it,  I can recover everything that was on the one I have before the error?

It is so annoying that I did nothing to get that error and it looks like it forced me to go back to factory settings.

Do you know if Norton 360, if I can find how to get it back on, would be any help. I thought it would protect the computer from stuff like this?  It is not like I go on weird sites, mainly it is for gaming and storage of photos or important screenshots.  Why was this not simple when I think an update had to cause it?

Sorry for whining, my son is disabled and when he is feeling good enough I game with him.  I don't have a clue of everything we even had.

Thank you so much for your help figuring out if there is something I can do, or if its hopeless.  You are an Angel.

Hope you have a great Christmas!

Thank you.  I was trying so hard not to goof up, and I was surprised Norton was not available to fix it.  Not knowing what I lost, especially of my son’s, is hard.  Why did I not take a photo of the stuff on the screen?  Lesson learned.

But luckily being careful with this computer, it has had no problems til now, can still be upgraded, and is working since I think 2014!  So it is not a total loss but a blessing that I don't have to replace it.

Thank you so much for letting me pick your brain.

Thank you so much for your suggestions!  I still need to read the first two links when my eyes uncross, but surprisingly the video link is one of the last things I found.  But somehow I still did not save anything.  I bought this computer new and thought it was around 2016 but it might have been 2014?   I wish it was possible to reboot my memory!

You guys are really Angels for helping!  At least I know I tried several things right that just did not work.  I did not want to tell my son I messed up, maybe you could?  Lol.  I wish I could just take that last boot back.  Hopefully I can somehow save a lot by getting another hard drive and learning more, or finding someone inexpensive and trustworthy to reverse my last action or knows where to find and retrieve what disappeared.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Hopefully as a team we have you started on the right track.

Sure, tell your son that it was my fault. My wife does that all the time anyway so one more person piling on is really no big deal...(grin).

And a very wonderful Christmas to you and yours as well!
