CD/DVD Format option missing in on right click in file explore

CD/DVD Format option missing in on right click in file explorer. The Eject information is there, but not the Format, or in the case of an RW Disk, the erase is missing.

The drive works when a formatted disk is inserted. And I can read and write data on an RW disk.
If a formatted CD-ROM disk is inserted, it reads it and displays the information, i.e., CD-ROM inserted into the DVD RW Drive on the Devices and Drive information it shows CD-ROM.

If a CD blank disk is inserted, it displays the appropriate information, i.e., CD-R disk inserted into the DVD RW drive on the Devices and Drive information, it shows CD-R, but the following message shows up.

"Windows can't read the disc in drive V:\
Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it.”

What version of Windows?

A comment on RW discs.  Using an RW disc sounds great, like an old floppy disc. But, beware!  RW discs are known to lose format and or data.  We have seen this many times on the forum.  If you have not yet had any problems with RW count yourself very lucky.   If you want to write/read/rewrite use a USB flash drive as they are more reliable.

I don't know, but I can tell you this (from experience) ... I used to burn a lot of discs (kinda still do).

Skip CD-RW and DVD-RW (re-writables). Use High-quality name-brand CD-R and DVD-R or DVD+R . Stick to "single layer" discs. Write it once and be done.

If you want to re-write files on removable-media, get yourself a flash-drive. Even a 8gb one holds more than a disc.

My XPS8940 will not display option to format a DVD-R disk. Running Windows 11 Pro. If I put an unformatted DVD-R in the drive, Windows reports that the DVD needs to be formatted but there is no option in any menu (including right-clicking on the DVD drive) to allow the blank DVD to be formatted.

Also, if I format the DVD on another stystem, the XPS8940 reports that the drive has 4..37GB of available space but I cant copy anything to the DVD. In essence, I can't write to the DVD drive at all; format or copy.

Formatting a CD or DVD to write data to it is a bad idea.  Discs formatted this way (packet writing) are the least reliable and known to lose data and/or format.   If you want to save data to a disc, use a disc program that writes to a disc without prior formatting, such as Nero BurningROM, or free programs such as CDBurnerXP or Imgburn (two popular burning programs).

If you want to save data, use a USB flash drive as it can be written to and erased just like a hard drive.  A flash drive is basically a USB SSD drive.

@Adventurer2022  Just download/install Cyberlink Media Essentials from the Microsoft store which is free for Dell users. (You have to download on a Dell PC.)

It includes Power2Go which will burn CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
