Xenith: some general questions (usb on xenapp, customization, updates)

Xenith: some general questions (usb on xenapp, customization, updates)

Hi everyone,

wanting to replace our aging HP thin clients (running an ica client in an LTSP environment, which is quite "zero" already) we are looking into the Xenith product.

We would be using these with a Xenapp 6.0 farm, no xendesktop. My questions are:

1-are usb keys / external hdd's supported on a xenapp session? This post seems to indicate it does not or with difficulties and if that is the fact I can immediatly forget about using xenith.
2-are there other things one would take for granted not supported when using xenith with xenapp published desktops? all this xendesktop hyping... Xenapp support seems to be an afterthought.
3-I talked to a wyse representative on a citrix event and he told me it is advised to take a wyse support contract which will assure me of software updates for the wyse firmware. Is there any information about how often updates will be released and how limited the hardware is to allow for new technologies to be implemented?
4-is it possible to customize the login screen / to hard-code the domain in the login screen / to skip the login screen and immediatly connect to a session and let the user enter their credentials in the terminal server session itself?
5-Is it in some way possible to, for instance, connect to a standard windows remote desktop session? For instance with an alternative/customized firmware.
6-I hear it's only possible to link to xenapp published desktops. I figure it is not possible to use a xenith client as a kiosk appliance with a published Internet Explorer, for example?
7-how does one configure the keyboard layout, screen resolution etc which are specific to each client?
8-is the %clientname% environment variable available in the session just as with any other client?
9-what is the maximum supported color depth?

Thank you!

edit: I suppose the administrator manual (for which I found the link here) will answer some of my questions already.

If you don't have XenDesktop, then you should be looking at the V10LE, C10LE or R10L instead, these products are based on Wyse ThinOS (WTOS).
1- WTOS is more flexible as it will work with RDP, ICA, Citrix Published Apps and Published Desktops, XenDesktop, and VDI environments and supports USB keys.
2- Xenith does not support published apps, as this product was designed for Citrix XenDesktop Virtual environments.
3- Firmware upgrade is available for free for the first 90 days from date of purchase. Software Maintenance is required after 90 days to get updates. Upgrades and Hotfixes are released quarterly or as needed.
4- Global customization of WTOS clients is available through the WNOS.INI. Granular customization can be done via the User.INI (for user specific configuration) and via the MAC.INI (for device specific configuration).
5- Yes, WTOS can connect to RDP, ICA and VMware VDI environments.
6- See #2.
7- Through the INI files. WNOS.INI for ALL devices, USER.INI for individual user and the MAC.INI for individual devices.
8- We do support System variables and username is one. The formay we use is $UN
9- 32 bit
You may also want to look into the WTOS INI reference Guide available at www.wyse.com/manuals and search for KB 20795

thank you! Xenith might not be what I'm looking for after all. Still might give it a try though.
