Installing firmware behaves differently with/without network/internet connection...Why?

I have prepared some USB thumb drive and installed the latest ThinLinux successfully on quite a number of DELL Wyse 3040 thin clients.

When I now did another installtion, the thin client happened to be connected to the network/internet during the installation process - and this seems to make a huge difference...

The installation now was different as it obviously was downloading software/packages from the internet - and it was taking hours (and I actually had to cancel it) instead of like 20 minutes.

So my question is: Would it make sense to accept the slow installation because the internet sources are more up to date?

Any hint is appreciated very much!

Update:  I repeated the firmware installation with an existent network connection now. It took like 50 minutes due to the additional downloads of software packages (this depends on the individual netwok speed, of course). The system does not show any obvious differences, but I have not yet compared it  with a system which has been installed without an existing network connection.
