SM Bus Controller driver

Hello Everyone,

Just completed a clean install of Windows 7 X64 Home Premium onto a new Dell Inspiron One 2330 with an i5 processor.

I’ve installed all drivers from the Dell website but I’m having a problem with the SM Bus Controller driver. I receive a code 28, drivers not installed, manufacturer is Unknown, Location is PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3.

The Hardware ID’s are;

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&SUBSYS05481028&Rev_04

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&SUBSYS05481028

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&CC_0C0500

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22&CC_0C050

I tried running automatic update but Windows can’t locate driver, I also tried a reinstall of the drivers from the Dell site for Chip set.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks for your help.

Hi southwales,

Please download the wireless drivers from the below link and update the status.

Hello Harish M,

Tried your recommendation, I selected the "modify" option during install but it did not help, no driver(s) installed for this device, code 28.

According to pcidatabase.com 8086 is the vendor code for Intel (makes sense) and the 1E22 code is SM-Bus Control of the Intel Z77 Chipset. If I’m reading the information correctly it says that this is for Intel 7 Series C216 Chipset Family SMBus Controller of the Z77 Chipset drivers, but it also says it's for Windows XP??? Does this make any sence?

Responded to your private message:

There seems to be a bug on drivers and downloads. The chipset should show 4 drivers and it only shows 3. Most of the time 3 are displayed but for me 1 time the 4th did display.

On the Dell ftp website for the Dell Inspiron One 2330 it is missing also.

However what you need is the Intel Chipset Installation Utility for Windows 7 64 bit for this model (which should probably be installed before all the other drivers). The drivers and downloads page should lead to it here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/xps-one-27-2710-aio?driverId=3VG78&osCode=W764&fileId=2998534317

Or direct link:

http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER00736882M/2/Chipset_Intel_W74_A00_Setup-3VG78_ZPE.exe

Install this and see if your problem is resolved.

Hi natakuc4,

Thanks for your help.

WOW, I hope I’m not creating a big problem for this install… I tried installing the driver recommended by Harish M, but it made no difference.

You may have to add an addendum to your tutorial about how "not" to do a clean install of Windows 7.

Like you mentioned I should have installed this driver before the others but at this point I’ll give it a try, if it works it works. Or would you recommend uninstall all drivers and doing a reinstall?

Give it a try just installing it to see what happens. It should be okay. You may want to attempt running the setup of the other Chipset Drivers, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology and the video driver after it though.

I noticed that the Audio driver is missing for Windows 7 on this model.

I can't find the one thats meant to be listed for this model but you can try using this one: http://ftp.dell.com/audio/R245244.exe

Hi natakuc4,

Success! The 2710 chip set driver fixed the problem. I was unable to install the Chipset_Intel_W74_A00_Setup-3VG78_ZPE file, it would partially unzip but stop with the message “Part of a multidisk zipfile. Insert the last disk of the set.”

I also received this message when installing the audio driver you had recommended. This PC has built-in speakers and has a Microsoft driver called “High Definition Audio Device”, could this be why Dell doesn’t list/provide a separate audio driver on their website?

As you had mentioned in your tutorial Dell’s driver website is in need of maintenance. It's amazing how a driver could randomly appear. When I was downloading the drivers for this PC I had checked both the website and ftp pages several times and each time there were only 3 drivers listed under chipset.

I’ll give this PC a few days but it appears to be stable and working well.

Thanks again for all your assistance.

The chipset driver for the XPS 2710 and the Inspiron 2330 should be pretty much identical so don't worry about that although it seems like it didn't download properly. I would of suggested extracting the file with 7zip but its unnecessary.

The HD Audio Device means it has a generic driver which may work quite well but in general the driver from Realtek would be better.

@Philip_Yip You think this would fix the same issue I'm having with my M14X R1??
