Not enough memory?

Hi there,

I have had a Dell Desktop XPS 430 for almost 2 years now and am suddenly getting a message on my screen that says I do not have enough memory?

I am not finding much info through Google, and thought I would ask here.

Thanks for your help, the computer has been excellent until this started a couple of weeks ago.

Michael.

Several direct questions have been asked and not answered.

What is the exact error message?

What does it say about the memory in cmos?

Adobe Acrobat 9

When scanning a color copy at a Resolution of 1200DPI
error saying that - "There is not enough memory to complete this scanning operation."

Ok i am a bit confused.  My dell has been fine for almost 2 years and was brand new top of the line and now this error starts and it is not a dell problem?

So i am to run cmos?  And then what do i do?

I have not had a blue screen.

Thanks

No Os version??    Amount of ram listed in Bios??  The error is not complete enough to venture a remedy.

Thank you for the direct questions, I will most certainly give as thourough of answers when I can get home and try this on my desktop computer.  Please note that I have never used CMOS and would simply like to know what it is I do after I hit F2 on my computer.  If I don't know what to do, or look for, this will be pointless for me.

Listed as "BIOS Setup (F2)" on the top-right of your screen after powering on.

I am running Windows 7 and I believe there is 4 gigabytes of RAM installed.

Boot CMOS.   What does it say?

What is the exact words of the error?

Blue Screen STOP error?

"Error: Not enough memory to complete the scan. Followed by Paused by System message."  is a not a dell problem.

Nor is it a windows 7 problem.

We won't ask any questions that are pointless, so if you can answer the questions that are asked as accurately and exactly as possible, that will help us eliminate or confirm possible problems.  Since the system is probably out of warranty, assigning blame (Dell, Microsoft, McAfee, or user-error) isn't helpful ... it doesn't matter anymore.  However it happened, the problem is now yours to deal with.  We can try and help you figure out what is wrong and how to try to fix it.

BIOS (seldomly called CMOS) is your System Setup screen where you can get basic hardware information about your system.  You get into it by hitting F2 - there is a prompt to remind you as soon as you turn on your computer, in the top-right corner - BIOS Setup (F2).  The reason we want you to check the BIOS is to see - under the System section / Memory Info - if all the installed RAM/memory is being recognized.  If it is, then the memory (hardware) should be fine, and we need to look at other possibilities.  If it is not all being recognized, then one or more of the memory sticks could be bad and need replacing.

If your memory appears ok, depending on the exact message you are getting (also why we ask this question), it may mean that you are running software that has a "memory leak" (wherein a simple reboot will usually make the error go away - at least until you run the program again), your hard drive (or your C:\ partition) could be full, or you could have (as SS inelegantly tried to illustrate) some other program causing a problem.

Computers work just fine ... until they don't.  Some problems have warning signs, but most do not.  Hardware can fail, and software can get corrupted on completely healthy computer hardware - that is the nature of the beast.    If it is a hardware problem, it could have been a result of a power event (major like an outage or spike, or minor like a "flicker", or even static electricity from dusting/vacuuming, etc.), humidity or dust, being dropped, etc.  If it is a software issue, it could be as a result of newly installed software, newly installed drivers for a new or existing device, an update, file system or Windows corruption from an unexpected shutdown, drive fault, etc.

With as little as we have to go on, here are some questions to start with:

How much memory/RAM does the BIOS report?
Is the reported amount correct from your order or your knowledge?
Is your Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?
What is the exact wording of the error message?
When do you get the error?
What are you doing when you get it?
Is it repeatable - does it happen everytime you try it?
Have you installed any new software/hardware?
How much "free space" do you have on C: in [My] Computer?

Hi there,

I have some answers now...

Memory/RAM is 6gb and this is the correct amount.

Windows 7 - 64 bit

error message is "Your computer is low on memory, to restore enough memory for program to work correctly, save your files and then close or restart all open programs"

I get the error when doing everyday stuff such as surfing the web

It will happen a few times per day

Have not installed new software, but have uninstalled a few things before Christmas.

I have 538 gbs of free space on C drive.

Thanks for the help!

mboulton,

It could be that the virtual memory is low. Here is some information that may help you pinpoint this issue.
