Installshield from Macrovision/Need to know what it is

I see the following lines in the startup related to Installshield: ISUSPM.exe
and issch.exe. I searched the Net and it seems to be software related to
Macrovision. I looked for it in the Program list and in Add/Remove Programs
(Control Panel) and it is not listed. There's only a "Program Updates" icon
in Control Panel belonging to Installshield. My question is: Is this software
essential to WinXP proper functioning? If not, how can I uninstall it? Thanks.

The install shield update manager is used/installed with some software (Sonic, Corel....). .  The related startup items you mention refer to its automatic update features (i.e. it looks for updates for the apps it is monitoring), and are generally not required because the kind of apps it monitors in my experience do not offer updates at all frequently. For example Roxio Easy Media Creator suite 8 (which installed the update manager oh my system) had one update in a year; Corel Paintshop pro X which it also manages has had 3. So it is bettter to check manually from time to time.

For ISUSPM.exe it states

InstallShield Update Service related; Automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software. Not required.

For issch.exe it states

InstallShield Update Service Scheduler; automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software so you’re always working with the most current version. Not required.

You can use the control panel icon to check for updates manually for the software it is monitoring (you can see what they are by double clicking on the icon and clicking settings). Or you can use the check for updates feature in each app. If you uninstall the update manager, the manual check for updates in the apps that use it may not function.

However, if you want to uninstall the instalshield update manager, you need to download the uninstaller from:

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006

as you found out, it is not listed separately in add/remove.

Thanks JRosenfeld for the info. But my question still is: what do I need Installshield for?? What is it for? And is it essential for the proper operation of Windows XP?

Installshield itself is used by many apps in their installation.

Installshield update manager is not essential for the proper running of Windows XP. As I said, the installshield update manager is used by some apps to manage their automatic and manual check for updates. Did you find out which software installshield update manager is managing?

No, but I downloaded your suggested uninstall file and it worked flawlessly, no more "Program Updates" manager from  Installshield in Control Panel. Thanks.

Fine, but as I said, check for updates will probably be broken in the app(s) that used it. That may not matter too much, you can usually get updates from the web site for the app.

I do all my updates manually always, so no problem. Regards.
