HELP! Fonts folder causing Windows Explorer to crash - cannot access Fonts folder.

Hello:

I'm getting the following error message:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I get the message above whenever I attempt to access the Fonts folder from the Control Panel, or when I try to open it on the C drive using Windows Explorer. When I try to access it, Windows Explorer shuts down, the desktop comes back, and I am able to continue using the computer. It does not seem to be affecting any other computer function. There appears to be only one way to see the contents of the Fonts folder: In Windows Explorer, I can select (but not open) the Fonts folder in its location in C/Windows/Fonts. I then do an all-inclusive Search within Fonts, and the Search results give me the contents of the Fonts folder. Using this method only, I can see what's inside the fonts folder. Double-clicking on it or trying to open it in any other way results in the crash above.

Using the Search method I described above to view the contents of the Fonts folder, I have tried to replace its entire contents of the Fonts folder with a backup of all my fonts.  I was able to do the replacement, but the problem continues to occur.  I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, doing an sfc /scannow scan, scanning windows using Norton Systemworks, deleting the Fonts folder (it will not let me under any circumstances), and finally re-installing Windows XP.  I did not try a clean re-install because I did not want to lose my settings, data, and apps.  I also tried a System restore, but this was after I did the XP re-installation, so the history of the original installation seems to be gone and I cannot go backwards beyond the date of my re-installation (yesterday).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Matthew

I wonder if it's a memory (RAM) issue?  How much memory do you have?  If you have less than 256Mb, consider upgrading to a least 256 and even 512 is a better amount for Windows XP.    Space available for disk "virtural" memory could also be an issue.  You didn't list your PC model or any specs so no one can specifically address the issue with your specific hardware.

The fonts folder can become very large and it could be causing the problem, if no other folder or nothing else you do with the Windows Explorer causes it to crash.

Reinstalling Windows XP over it'self it not really a "fix".  If there is an XP problem ultimately the only way to permanently fix it is to do a full "clean" restore.  You should have your user data backed up periodically anyway - it's not in case you have to reinstall, it's for "when" you have to reinstall.

I forgot to add:

My system is a 3 month old Dell Inspiron 8600, Pentium M 1.6, 768MB RAM.  There are 208 individual font files in the Fonts folder, for a total of about 50 fonts installed.

You can try running Tweak UI for XP which has a repair font folder function. You can download it here:

I've got that same laptop, too! Well, sort of; it has a Precision M60 motherboard for the extra features. But I digress.

I came here because I recently discovered a glitch in Windows 7 where, if you enter the Fonts folder, and then go to another folder before it's done loading, it crashes. I was interested in it, so I looked it up for answers. This is one of the several places I've been. But this was about Windows XP, not 7.

I'm sorry, I get excited too easily. Have a nice day.
