FInding your IP address

Hello,

Please help an old man:

I remember using a couple of commands in the command prompt years ago to find your IP address, pre-XP.

How can I find out my IP address with XP? Is there more than one way easily available?

Open a command prompt.  To see a list of all the various IP Config commands type ipconfig /? (noting the space between the "g" and the "forward slash") and press "Enter".

Generally speaking, the commands ipconfig and ipconfig /all will be all you need.

EDIT:  Sorry, Steve...you must be closer to the servers.

The sure way is to open a command prompt window by going to Start > Run and typing cmd then clicking OK.  In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all then hit the Enter key.

Another easier way is if you have a network icon in the system tray, right click on that icon and select Status from the menu.  Then click on the Support tab.

The above two are good if you are behind a router but if you want to know your true address, go to:

www.ipchicken.com

jmwills is correct.  However the information is of little use since the typical ISP will not allow external users access to that IP.  Also most ISP use dynamic IP even for broadband, which means that IP will change over time.

Micheal is right, although for the tidy little sum of about $15 (US) annually, you can subscribe to www.no-ip.com and let this program run in the background.  It will verify your external IP Address and kepp it updated with a DNS server they have.  So that means I can run a Windows Small Business server and not have to worry about getting a static IP Address.
