Copying address book

Open Outlook Express (the one that has the contacts you want to export).

Click on the 'File' menu at the top, then 'Export - Address Book'

Highlight 'Text File - Comma Separated Values' and click 'Export'

Now give it a name and browse to where you want to save it on the local computer.

Close Outlook Express.

Now find the file you just saved and copy it to removable media.

Place removable media in other PC and copy the file to Desktop or My Documents.

Open Outlook Express and click 'File - Import - Other Address Book'

Highlight from the list 'Text File - Comma Separated Values' and click 'Import'.

Now browse to the file you copied (on the Desktop, or in My Documents)

When you've located the file ( a CSV file), click 'Open', then 'Next'

I think that should do it.

The reason I told you to copy the file from the removable media to the Desktop or My Documents is because Windows XP often won't let you import directly from removable media owing to it's security features and access permissions.

You should have been able to move the address book the way you attempted to. I am a bit confused by your terminology when you say you copied "AddrBook.wab" to CD. The Outlook Express Windows Address Book file should be of the form Username.wab.

Pip22's suggestions seemed to work.

But yes, it is quite odd. This does not seem to be the file we would have expected. My wife and I both have “identities” in OEX (on this Dell desktop machine) and address books, i.e., each of us has a set of Contacts and a set of “Shared Contacts.” However, searching for *.wab turns up only the file c:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\AddrBook.wab and nothing like username.wab or anything else whose name has any obvious connection with either of us. The file is reasonably current (modified 1/12/05, not obviously an old artifact). She has not been using the desktop since about 1/13 or so. I have not used OEX for e-mail for quite a few months, although I continue to use it for news groups.

I exported the Address Book--well, I should say I opened her address book in OEX and exported it to the desktop in the CSV format, copied it to a floppy and imported it into OEX on the notebook she is using. I assume that what I copied, in effect, was AddrBook.wab but maybe not. In Win Explorer that file is 337kb but as a CSV file only 5kb. What ended up on her machine looks quite like OEX on the desktop, at least in terms of address book, both hers and whatever remained of mine and the Shared COntacts.
