converting/ripping files to mp3 format using Media player 10

I have a question.  Has anyone tried ripping/converting WMA to MP3 using Media player 10 that came installed on your Inspiron running Windows Media Center?  Currently I do not have the option to do this.  I know Media player 10 can rip MP3s, but apparently (according to Dell support) the version of Media Player 10 that can be downloaded from Windows is not compatible with Media Center.  I know this to be true because although I was able to rip MP3s, I was not able to view any videos at all using Media Center.  Music jukebox also came installed on my laptop, but it cannot convert WMAs.

So, here's the question:  Is there a plug-in I could get for MP10 that would allow me to convert or make MP3s that is compatible with Media Center?   If not a plug-in, is there a software package that I could get that would allow me to convert/rip WMAs to MP3s and be compatible with Media Center?  Ok, that was a couple of questions....sue me.

You were misinformed by Dell Support. I reinstalled WMP10 from Windows, and it certainly is compatible with MCE. All music and videos that play in WMP can be played in MCE, and vice versa. The Windows Audio Converter Toronto699 mentions is also accessible as a plugin in WMP (Tools>Plugins>Windows Audio converter).

Thank you both for replying.  I found a program that does the conversion.  Best of all, it's FREE!!  It's freeware and the program name is Media Coder.  I don't know if it's compatible with MC, but it did work on my PC at work which is running XP.

I think this is question is along this thread's lines.  I just purchased an XPS 400 and am amazed at all that I have to learn to fully utilize this system!  Right now, though, I need help figuring out what to do with my original music saved on CD, that I want to e-mail to someone.  I figured out how to 'rip' the songs to my hard drive through the Windows Media Player and now the tracks are resident on my hard drive as .WAV files.  But when I tried to send the tracks as e-mail attachments, I was unable to do so.

QUESTION:  Do I have to save the songs to another format first?  If so, how do I go about doing that?  I have received e-mails with .WAV files in the past, so I'm confused as to what I'm doing wrong.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Peace & Light

M

Did the email u tried to send the wave  files with not send or did they come back as undeliverable {if so wave file was to big is my guess}  or did u get another error or any error at all ?  id would convert the wave files on the CDs to MP3 using windows audio converter thats in WMP 10 u can find it by reading another post in this these posted threads ..Audio converter is  in tools in WMP 10... Email should send no matter what the file ..perhaps your email has a limit on the size of file u can send   u can check that as well  , some wave files are huge to large  ,.. id convert the wave to mp3 as its a smaller file ..

Thanks for responding so quickly.  I attached 4 files.  I use Yahoo.  The e-mail stayed in "Please Wait While We Attach Files" mode, so it never popped back to my message screen so I couldn't click "Send".

I saw that there was something called MPEG-layer 3 which I presume is MP3 converter.  But when I tried to convert the files it gave me a 'failed' message and said that the original file was not one that could be converted.  This didn't make any sense to me.

When I get home, I will see if I can find the software you referred to and try converting it that way.

Thanks for your help.

It's me again.  OK - I read other posts here and see that I too have Windows Digital Media Enhancements/Windows Audio Converter that supposedly converts .wav or wma files to MP3.  I'm getting a message now that only PCM files can be converted to MP3 - also something about not having the right "codec".

Still not working.

Please help if you can!

If you are comfortable with editing your registry, then the fix in the following post should work:

Found free 30 day software from www.poikosoft.com which enables MP3 converting.

I'll get my IT Techie to check and fix the registry re: codec.  Thanks heaps.
