Can't update Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 - Update error 80070002

Question

I continue to get the error 80070002 everytime I try to install this MS update that was released yesterday, 11/28/07.   I have tried everything listed on the MS web site regarding this error.  Anyone else had this problem?  Got any solutions?

I have experienced the same problem as you. I followed all of the instructions from Microsoft and still no luck. This is the first time I have had any trouble with updates. My Vista HP has run great since buying my new system in Feb. I'll keep looking into the issue and post back with any solutions. Maybe some of the great folks here have got some ideas. ?????? CK

i may be wrong here, but there is no service pack 1 for vista (yet - SP1 is due in 2008). are you certain this .NET framework isn't for XP's service pack 1?

I've had the same problem with that update.  There is a lot on the web about that and even a Microsoft KB article.  I've tried everything listed on the Microsoft KB article and the various web sites and nothing works.  I currently have that update 'hidden'.  KB886903

I had the same failure. Tried the recommended solutions (deleting files and folders under the SoftwareDistribution folder) but to no avail. I then manually downloaded Service Pack 1 from here , saved it and installed. Worked fine. Subsequent to this installation, Windows update then recommended and installed a further Security Update for .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 ( KB929729). This latter update was originally released in July but it was revised in late October.

Tried the manual download and it wouldn't install.  One other items was to uninstall Net Framework 1.1 and then reinstall, but Vista would not let me uninstall it (running as Administrator)

Strange............... I've followed this procedure on 2 machines now and it worked both times. I'm not sure what to suggest next???

Getting same message as you. After trying all suggestions listed in knowledge base with no different results, decided to submit trouble ticket to Microsoft on this issue. Able to do other updates so there must be an issue with the service pack 1 update. Hopefully I hear back soon from MS and will let you know what they say. Regards, George

I was not optimistic waiting for a MS response and thanks to rebel9's suggestion on how he solved problem, I followed his link to manually download the service pack 1 and it worked. I then ran windows update again to install service pack 1 and got message that update was succesful. Thanks again rebel9.

Hey Geo,  I noticed Rebel's post and went and checked it out but when I looked at the system requirements the only vista ones there seemed to refer to 64 bit only.  Won't that make a difference for people with 32 bit?  I have 32 bit so I am hesitant to try this.  I'm just your basic user and I'm not sure about this.  If you think it doesn't matter then I will give it a whirl?  I looked but didn't see anything that referred to 32 bit.

I have 32 bit and it seemed to work. You would think MS would check what OS system you have and not install it if they were not compatible. May not hurt if you give it a try and it gets rid of that message. When I hear back from MS I will post it on this thread.
