All windows rearranges whenever i close my laptop

how can i fix this problem?  whenever i close the lid of my laptop, when i open it back up, all my windows and desktop icons end up being rearranged.  the windows are all the same size.  seems to me like the screen was resized to 800 by 600 pixels.  very annoying especially when i have programs and other windows open.  can anyone help?

specs:

inspiron e1705
intel core 2 duo t7200 (2.0 ghz)
nvidia geforce go 7900 gtx  512 mb
80 gig hd + external 160 gig hd both running 7200 rpm
2 gig ram
running windows xp media center edition

no that didnt work.  im pretty familiar with computers, but never have i come across this problem.  still whenever i close my lid and open it up, "all" my windows are shrunk to 800x600.  the desktop shrinks because my recycling icon (which is currently on my bottom left of the screen) moves to the bottom left of the screen at the same position as to when i manually change my display to 800x600(same for the size of all windows opened).  why is the display switching to 800x600 when the lid is closed and then when opened, all windows stay at that size but my desktop refreshes back to 1920x1200??

This sounds like an ACPI problem with the sleep mode or a deficiency in the video drivers to properly resume from sleep mode.
