VPLEX - Practice Test

Hi everyone,

I'm taking the VPLEX Practice Exam and have a question on the following two questions (see images below).

For question #30: according to the student guide it's best to create the metadata backups on a different array. However, the practice test shows the answer as "Create four 80GB LUNs from the local storage array and deploy those LUNs to the loca VPLEX cluster as its Metadata volume and backup volumes." This doesn't seem right to me but wanted to hear what everyone else thought.

As far as question #55: I selected the answer as shown in the screenshot. However, that was incorrect. The practice test is telling me that the correct answer is: /var/log/VPlex/cli/capture. Is that correct?

Thank you in advance!

I agree. However, the student guide has the following:

Actually I misread the answers.  But my answer still stands.  Think about the implications of having a mirror leg of the metadata volume on the remote array.

For number 1. Think about the implications of having the backup volumes on the remote array.

Don, I think the practice test is correct. I think the student resource guide from VPLEX training is incorrect. My screenshot in the first post is from the practice test and the answer is correct. The two screenshots I posted afterwards are from the student resource guide. Not sure if you know how/if this can be corrected in the student resource guide.

Unfortunately I couldn't submit feedback.

Thank you for confirming. I hope the real test contains the correct answer if such a question is presented.

I am not sure why it says separate failure domains.  There has never been a requirement to place metadata backups on a remote array in a metro configuration as described.  Plus the first answer changes the customer provisioning practice.  Without that slide my automatic answer to that question would have been have the second answer.

I assume through the practice test you can submit feedback.  I would point out the inconsistency between the slide and the correct answer.

For question #30:

Until recently, array cross connect was never supported - only host cross connect.  Due to this, all volumes including metadata, logging and regular data volumes had to be provisioned from local storage only.

An additional requirement was that the metadata and metadata backups must be placed on different arrays meaning that the metadata mirror must have one leg on one array and the other leg on a different array.  The metadata backups must have one volume on one array and the other on a different array.  If only a single array were present then there are provisions within the configuration warning about this requirement but allow you to proceed.

The confusion comes in with the statement about "separate failure domains".  Everyone seems to think of this as meaning a different datacenter.  This is due to the requirements for VPLEX Witness where a separate failure domain does mean a third datacenter.  What is meant here by a separate failure domain is what you define as pertaining to what type of failure you are protecing against.  As in the case here, a separate failure domain could be different power boundries or a different fire surpression zone within the datacenter even different floors of the building if you are in a flood zone.  Specifically, you don't want any single failure to take out both arrays that the logging or metadata volumes reside on.

I mentioned "Until recently".  Array cross-connect is now supported strictly for the logging and metadata volumes.  Common data volumes must reside at the local site.  Additionally, this configuration is limited to those sites that are less than or equal to 1ms latency rtt.  This configuration allows additional resiliency for the system volumes when only a single array is present at each site.

I'll respond in a few minutes about the second question.  I need to get on  a system to verify first.

Thank you Mike. So if I come across a similar question on the exam, what will the right answer be? That's really where my confusion comes from. The student resource guide states exactly what you said but the correct answer in the practice test is: "Create four 80GB LUNs from the local storage array and deploy those LUNs to the local VPLEX cluster as its Metadata volume and backup volumes." I'm sure a similar type of question will be asked on the exam.

Thank you for looking into question #55 as well. The practice test states that the correct answer is "/var/log/VPlexcli/capture." That can't be the correct answer but I'll wait to see what you find.

Sure. It's E20-260 (VPLEX Specialist Exam for Implementation Engineers). See the following link as well that contains practice tests: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-17867
