RecoverPoint VPLEX Configurations

Hi,

I have two questions with regards to the configuration of RecoverPoint and VPLEX.  According to the documents I've read RP and VPLEX can be configured as follows:

RecoverPoint Local - my assumption is this is CDP.

RecoverPoint Remote - my assumption is this is CRR.

RecoverPoint Local and Remote - my assumption is this is CLR

Metropoint - my assumption is this is just for distributed VVs.

My question is do I have that right?  If so then is Metropoint the only way to protect distributed volumes with RP?

Thanks!

Hi,

With a VPLEX involved, assuming you are talking about a Metro configuration given the mention of distributed volumes, you can protect these volumes in 2 different ways:

1. VPLEX Metro + RecoverPoint - this is essentially a VPLEX Metro setup with distributed volumes where RecoverPoint is installed at only 1 site in the VPLEX Metro and communicates with another Recoverpoint cluster in another site (non-VPLEX integrated or VPLEX integrated). With this configuration you can provide RecoverPoint Local and Remote Protection (assuming 2 RP sites), however you can only protect ONE side of the distributed volume.

2. VPLEX MetroPoint - this is the cadillac of protection that has the same layout as above except that now you have RecoverPoint clusters at BOTH sides of the VPLEX Metro and they both communicate to a third RecoverPoint cluster at a third site. With MetroPoint you have the RecoverPoint clusters working in unison to handle any VPLEX site failures and still maintain RecoverPoint replication to the third site. With this configuration you can provide RecoverPoint Local and Remote Protection and will be able to protect BOTH sides of the distributed volume.

These 2 configurations are required to setup VPLEX with RP and can then protect volumes locally (CDP), remotely (CRR), or both (CLR) depending on what you have setup for RP clusters.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I really appreciate it.  So it essentially comes down to Metropoint for protecting distributed on both sides.
