Vostro 470 run so slow

Hello,

I've been wondering why my computer Dell Vostro 470 Desktop is running slow if I have the higher configuration?

This is the configuration of my computer but it runs slow:

PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 4 Cores

MEMORY RAM: 20GB

VIDEO CARD: GeForce GTX 1050Ti, 4GB DDR5

POWER SUPPLY: ATX Power Supply HX850i High-Performance

HARD DRIVE: 3TB  Seagate® BarraCuda® 3.5-inch, SATA 6Gb/s, 5400 rpm

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 10 Pro-64 Bits

BIOS: A14

I will appreciate you guys advice.

If that is the original HDD then a 4 TB SSD would be the first step. That SSD runs about 3-5 x faster than that HDD. Beside that point if original the HDD is getting pretty long in the tooth and bound for failure eventually. You can always either clone the HDD or better yet do a clean install to start fresh.

1-5400 RPM hard drive is not meant for the modern day Win10 and win 11 operating systems. (Its fine for storing games but not an active operating system)

2-The dell Vostro 470 uses an Msata slot on the mother board. You should buy an Msata card to achieve the fastest speed possible. You can find the MSATA here on ebay. Fanxiang SSD 1TB mSATA Solid State Drive 6Gb/s For PC/Laptop 550MB/S | eBay

3-You will not be able to clone your windows 10 on the msata due to the Hard drive  capacity unless you formatted and partitioned win 10 to use less than 947GB of a separate partition on the 3TB HD. If you have a partition under 1 TB then you want to download Macrium Reflect 8 (FREE Version) clone the partitioned operating system on to the Msata drive.

4- All the ram sticks should be matching in size and name brand. 20TB is an ODD number and there for the controllers on the ram sticks will be different. The system bios always defer to the slowest ram controller and syncs the faster ram sticks to operate as the slower ram sticks. So I know with an odd number of 20 one stick isnt optimized and therefor the other sticks of RAM will defer to operate as the slower stick of ram. Its an unbalanced dual channel mode if that.

5- 20 GB of RAM is telling me your combination is (2) 8GB sticks, and 1 4GB stick. If you are only using 3 of the 4 ram slots. BIOS will defer to single channel operation and kill overall performance.

Happy to help out! The mSATA thought is a fine idea as you could add an additional drive but since it is SATA it will still run at the same speed as a 2.5" SATA SSD.

@clintonsnow  this has been asked before and answered.

SSD is the only recommendation for an efficient operating system.

Besides JOcean recommended upgrades, you can do a free user benchmark test which would reveal any device that is way below expectations and runs too slowly.

@JOcean didn't realize that idea to change my original HDD to SSD hard drive, Your advice makes sense to me.

Thank you so much for your help.

@PC Parts Bin Thank you so much for your excellent explanation, I appreciate it.

HARD DRIVE:

I agree with you that the hard drive HDD 3.5" 5400RMP is not for windows 10 or 11. That makes sense to me.

You recommend that I replace my hard drive HDD 3.5", 5400RP and put in a newSSD 1TB mSATA Solid State.

MEMORY RAM:

After I read your reply on this post I realized that my memory rams are not the same.

I opened my computer and I saw 4 memory ram modules installed on my computer

and the 4 memory ram modules are not the same brand and capacity.

I have 2 Crucial Memory rams each 8GB and 2 Memory rams from unknown brand 2GB each so in total my computer has now 20GB but I think the 20GB are not working  with performance because 20GB it's a lot of memory RAM but the computer shouldn't run slow.

Today when I remove the 4 modules to take some pictures and I change the memory's positions so when the computer finish the startup it was even more slow and the computer goes to restart it self and this happen 3 times then I decide to open the computer again and change the memory ram as it was before I opened the computer then I start the computer again and now it starting up fine.

Do you recommend me to buy two extra memory ram Crucial 8GB each and install it on my computer?

THIS IS FROM THE SYSTEM INFORMATION ON MY COMPUTER

THIS IS ONE THE UNKOWN BRAND MEMORY RAM MODULE INSTALLED ON MY COMPUTER.

@clintonsnow  YIKES! That is scary pairing of ram modules! Timing and controllers are all different. If the bios cant sort out the pairing it will default to a lower RAM frequency speed from 1600Mhz to 1333Mhz just so the bios can align all the CAS latency timings in synchronis.

What you need is cheap performance ram.

My recommendations with using these systems is either getting the CRUCIAL BALLISTIX SPORT RAM. You can only get it used and more than likely EBAY. Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (4GB x 4) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) BLS4G3D1609DS1S00 649528757845 | eBay

Ive tested teh crucial ballistix sport in both my HP and Dell systems and it tends to offer a little more kick to HP systems, but none the less it will still work great on Dell's

Or if you want new RAM you can order the Silicon Power Silicon Power DDR3 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz (PC3 12800) 240-pin CL11 1.35V / 1.5V | eBay

I use the silicone power in all my dells and it works phenomenal for the price point. The little untold secret is that silicon power uses the SAMSUNG XMP controller so this ram is tuned with really tight timings.

@PC Parts Bin I appreciate your advice because I wasn't aware of this and I was thinking that the main issue that my computer it's slow is the BIOs system that is A14 and there are no higher versions of this bios at Dell website support.

Well, in the past when I bought my computer I wanted to upgrade the memory rams and I've post an article here about that and a few member from this forum advice me to buy the two crucial memory rams that I have on my computer now so I bought the two memory rams Crucial DDR3, 1600MHz each module 8GB and they told me these are the correct memory rams for my computer.

But now a few years later again I've posted this new article a few days ago and now you are recommending me something very different that I bought before so I'm in the middle of a confusion because again I have to buy new memory rams and still not sure if it will solve the issue that my computer is run slow.

For my computer I rather use all brand new hardware and high quality to avoid any trouble.

For me, high performance means everything to work with confidence and I don't mind the cost of the hardware I just want the best on my computer.

This is the link that I've posted here a year ago for memory ram Dell Vostro 470:

@clintonsnow so to explain what I do.

I take defective computers and rebuild them from scratch. I only go as far as controllers, mosfet VRM’s, and capacitors.

I've bench marked and done a process called ram sorting. Which is pairing motherboards with the best ram that has the best controller for the mother boards bios.

under the micron manufacturer brand you get micron, then crucial which is also micron with an upgraded controller, then you get crucial ballistix. Microns crucial ballistix uses the fastest XMP controller (meaning adjustable frequency latency settings) along with out of the box the fastest timing marks.

silicon power hasnt been selling ram on the market very long. I believe silicon power ram began manufacturing in late 2019 and became a better known brand during the pandemic. But for the most part when I use CPU-Z to identify the pairing with the CPU and the ram controller. Silicon power uses a samsung controller and lower B grade samsung silicon ram.  So the ram will have more errors and slightly less reliability and longevity than micron. But out of the box on bench marks. The silicon power is scoring anywhere from 1.5 to 2% higher than the crucial ballistix ram on the Dell Systems.

if you want reliable long lasting speed with less errors crucial ballistix sport.

If all you want is the most blazing fast dell on the market and dont mind the fact you will probably be throwing away a ram stick in 3 to 5 years than I would go with the silicon power.

for the price of the silicon power ram it doesnt matter if you have to throw away a bad stick in a few years because the ram is 30% cheaper than buying a used set crucial ballistix sport.

I Ive used  all ram manufacturers including samsung, SK hynix, kinngston and they will all work and make your pc a well rounded  productivity machine.

But if you want to game and max out your frame rates thats only coming from the crucial ballistix sport or silicon power.

@PC Parts Bin Hello,

I would like to ask you the following important questions:

1)-Could you please explain to me a little bit more about mSATA for my Dell Desktop Vostro 470?

2)-Is the mSATA card a hard drive?

3)-Which are the new parts that I should Buy to replace the 3.5-inch SATA hard drive?

Thank you.

@clintonsnow mSATA was the early version of SATA SSD, they are basically the same as the 2.5" version as far as speed and performance are concerned. If you are going to replace the HDD with an SSD then you really do not need additional parts. The SSD, the 2.5" version, will install where the HDD is located now. If you are adding the mSATA SSD then all you may need are the retaining screws if they are not already installed in the mounting posts.
