Vostro 3681 cooler upgrade, and psu upgrade.

Recently Ive been looking into upgrading my Vostro 3681.

Could I upgrade the CPU cooler to a third party name brand one if I ever need to?

Will using a standard third party psu with a 24 pin to 6 pin adapter that claims works with dell motherboards with 6 pin power work. Such as this one:

Yes but tricky.  Third party cooler need to use M3 mounting screw in order to fit.  V3681 oem motherboard has no built in back plate, suggesting the stock cooler is directly mounted on M3 standoffs of chassis.

Disadvantage of third party cooler is unknown fan spec which may throw up a start up bios error if Dell bios finds the fan outside its acceptable rpm range.

V3681 motherboard has same 6+4+4 pin as in XPS 8940, Optiplex 7080.  You can use a dell oem psu up to 500w.  You can also use a standard 24 pin ATX psu plus a 24 to 6 pin adapter like this one https://www.amazon.com/COMeap-Power-Adapter-Motherboard-13-3-inch/dp/B08M5BZ6P8

V3681 chassis is SFF and uses low profile pancake dell oem cpu cooler.  This limits option to upgrade to standard cooler.  You can look for a low profile cooler that uses M3 mounting screw to replace the stock one.

Is there any options for third party coolers?

  • I dont really plan on using the side panel for it. So space constrictions arent a problem. Is there any coolers that you could recommend

In that case consider the Dell premium tower cooler for XPS 8940.
