PowerEdge R730xd - reusing a single drive to another R730xd in RAID

Hi Guys,

We have an unused PowerEdge R730xd server with storage in RAID 6. We are wondering if we can move one single drive into another live PowerEdge R730xd (in RAID 6) to replace the defected drive.

Actually, we are desperate now since two drives failed and one more drive was detected to fail. We are arranging new drives but will take more than a month to be delivered.

Can we pull out a drive on the same slot of the unused server and insert it to the same slot of the live server (example: from unused server slot 14 to live server slot 14)? or is it mandatory to clean the drive before inserting to live server?

Immediate advice is highly appreciated.

Hi Jo

On the drive you wish you use from the server that you are not using you would want to remove the raid configuation or you will end up getting a foreign config error.  As long as the drive matches the faulty ie, sas, sata ect and the capacity is the same or higher then you will have no issues.  If the old server is still functional I would power it up, enter the raid configuation utility and clear the raid configuration on all the drives.  You then have additional drives available at a moments notice.
