Black Screen

My 9-year-old Vostro 270s has some issues lately. One of them is that the screen suddenly turns to a black screen and the screen shows the previous content but in a lower resolution a few minutes later. This issue has occurred for one or two months. Yesterday, it turned to a black screen again and stayed on a black screen until I rebooted the PC. I have tried to address this issue by running hard drive defragmentation and software updates without any improvement. I can't see what else I can do to resolve this issue. Any solutions?

Try replace cmos battery with a new battery. Then try clean install of OS.

Interesting! I don't see how CMOS battery could be related to the issue as it occurs in middle of usage, but not during the boot time. The current OS is Windows 10 which is an upgraded version of OS from the original OS. I am not sure whether I have a CD of the original OS or not. I would be very hestinat to do a clean OS installation because all existing files and software would be erased if do so.

True. It is just messy and inefficient if not impossible to clean up OS laden with user installed software over years of use.  I consider it waste of effort.  Back up data and clean install is so much easier.  You can install the software you need and be glad you do not have to install the others you do not really need.  Lean and fit applies to pc too.
