Updates 3/7/24 - Malwarebytes 4.x

[ Please ignore if you've already updated to MBAM 5.x ]

The following was copied/pasted from Malwarebytes 4.6 - Malwarebytes for Windows Support Forum - Malwarebytes Forums

Hi there Malwarebytes community,

We have released a new version of your product, v4.6.10.316 component package 1.0.2286.

You can get the update right away by clicking "Check for updates" in Settings > General. Or, it will be automatically installed if you have automatic updates enabled.

Features and improvements

  • Minor updates to improve migration to Malwarebytes 5

At this time Malwarebytes 5 is also available directly from our download site.

  • Currently we are doing a slow rollout of Malwarebytes 5 via automatic updates as we are working on improving support for some non-standard licensing use cases before rolling out to a wider audience.
  • Please note that if the Malwarebytes Privacy VPN app is currently installed, the Malwarebytes 5 installer will only install Malwarebytes 4.
  • If you are using both Malwarebytes 4 and Malwarebytes Privacy VPN, and your products are activated with two different subscriptions or license keys, we recommend that you do not install Malwarebytes 5 at this time.

I don't have Malwarebytes Browser Guard activated because YouTube has become fussy about ad blockers and has pretty much shoved them down our throats again. Since Browser Guard is advertised as an ad blocker among other things, do you think YouTube would request I turn it off, like they did for Ublock Origin. Anyone else's experience with this would be appreciated

Dale,

It seems that Youtube is in a continual fight with ad-blocking programs (including uBlock and MalwareBytes)... Youtube moves to resist them, and then (some of the programs) try to get around the restrictions.   Put another way, something that works today may no longer work tomorrow!

I have uBlock Origin installed in both Edge and Firefox.   Looking at my settings, I have turned off uBlock for the Youtube site (i.e., I have added Youtube to the Trusted Sites tab in uBlock).

I also have Malwarebytes Browser Guard installed in both Edge and Firefox, but with no exception for the Youtube site.   I just tried Youtube, and each video played without a problem.   But I'm wondering if that's due to a recent change/update... because if I'm not mistaken, I USED TO get a request from Youtube to disable my ad-blockers there, which could be bypassed if I hit the refresh button for the page.

In short, the best answer for you would be to try things out, and see what happens on your system.   You may find out that Youtube won't object, and the videos will play just fine.   And if Youtube "barks" at you, you can try adding it as an exception to uBlock and/or Malwarebytes.   If setting an exception for you allows the videos, then you'll be able to watch the videos on Youtube, while maintaining the uBlock + BrowserGuard protection at other sites.

Another thing to consider:   BrowserGuard must be separately downloaded/installed into each browser that you want it to protect.   So if you have multiple browsers on your system, you can choose to install browserguard in one (where you won't go to Youtube), but not install it in the other (which you can then use for Youtube).   In my case, I don't have Browserguard in PaleMoon... because Browserguard isn't compatible with PaleMoon.   So if, for whatever reason, I can't watch a Youtube video in Edge nor Firefox, I can go watch it in PaleMoon.

Thanks for your advice. The ads aren't all that bad, just boring and annoying. I only have Edge on this computer, seems to adequately get the job done. I'll go ahead and install it and see what happens.
