McAffee

Hi  every one

its been a while  glad to see the same great people are still here

I've bought a new XPS 8300  & it comes with 18 months of McAffee

Is it still a poor choice & should I dump it & stay with my AVG, my old  faithfull

I also still run Spybot S&D, MBAM, & Spyware Blaster, along with my D-Link router for my firewall

Am always will to listen to any suggestions the group has to offer

Thanks to all of you

Bob

Hi Bob:

I also recently bought an XPS  8300 (nice system!) that came with McAfee pre-installed.

I have to tell you that I never activated McAfee, and uninstalled it ASAP. I did so based on my personal history of problems with McAfee (admittedly many years ago) but also because of the numerous problems reported in this forum over the years with this AV. McAfee has not fared well at the independent testing web-sites I trust, and I don't understand why Dell continues to bundle this troublesome AV with its PCs.

I can't comment on AVG,  which I left years ago. I've used the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE 2.0) on this system, with no regrets.

To be honest, if you are using Windows 7  behind a hardware firewall, and practising safe surfing,  I don't think it matters a whole lot which AV you use. But I still recommend MSE as the simplest solution.

Hi Bob,

I agree with Joe. I like Microsoft Security Essentials. AVG is not what it used to be years ago, so I no longer recommend it. Here is some information that ky331 posted here as well as at SpywareHammer: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=9656.0

I hope this helps.

Bob,

I would suggest there's no point to installing SpyBot on your new machine.

The "official" program hasn't been updated in YEARS...

and there's no reason to be a "guinea pig" for the "beta" version that's currently being tested.

Bob,

It's true that Spybot's DATABASE is still updated weekly (on Wednesdays)... but the PROGRAM itself hasn't been updated in several years... meaning its underlying technology is "old hat".   It's analogous to trying to watch modern HD-TV signals on an old black-and-white CRT TV.   Sure, you may be able to see something... but it can't possibly compare to what you'd see on a color flatpanel LCD display.

At one point, I used all of Spybot's multiply-redundant features:   immunization, TeaTimer, and SDHelper IE add-on.   I don't recall which I gave up first, but in some order, I got rid of the SDHelper and TeaTimer.   I then "tweaked" which of the Immunization components I would use... and ultimately reduced things basically to using only SpyBot's HOSTS file.

Spybot has been working on a new version 2.0, seemingly forever.   It's currently in a second beta (testing) release, which is known to have many bugs in it.

Anyway, while Spybot was taking time to reorganize... and living on its merits/legacy (rather than modern technology)... other programs made their way on to the scene.    Most notably MBAM, which is a "must have" anti-malware program.   for a second/alternative anti-malware scanner, my personal preference/recommendation is SAS (SUPERAnti-Spyware).   I am so confident in these two that I have no plans to even consider/test Spybot 2.0, when an "official" [non-beta] version is released.

Yes, SpywareBlaster is still a reasonable choice... though some say it's not as "important" on Vista and Win7 as it was on XP.   Regardless of "importance", it can't hurt anything to keep using it.

Hi Joe

long time since the Scratch Pad days those were some fun days

Hi to you also Bugbatter

you helped  me a couple of years ago with some nastys that my Grandson got on my other system

I haven't been all that happy with AVG lately either  its turned into a resource hog on this 8400, even with 4 gigs of ram

along with it telling me how much it has helped me every month   But I have noticed the amount of nastys it has protected me from is the same amount every month    hmmm

So when I pick up my new system tomorrow,  I will NOT activate  McAfee, instead I will get MSE 2. instead

I assume that I can get it from MS while I am doing all the updates &  patches on W7

Thanks alot

great help again

Bob

I only mentioned it here because Bob had referred to it in his opening post:   "I also still run Spybot S&D, MBAM, & Spyware Blaster, along with my D-Link router for my firewall."

Good point, ky331. I did not think anybody bothered to install Spybot anymore now that we have other free tools such as MBAM.

Yes, ky331, as did I, and to offer mention of MBAM as a replacement for Spybot.

I've bought a new XPS 8300  & it comes with..
Based on the tense of the verb,I interpreted Bob's post to mean that he was making plans to set up security similar to what he's been using.

Hi

August 5th, 2011 06:00

Well McAfee is poor choice as a AntiVirus based on my experience. I've been following the market and neither the reliability nor the performance is adequate. Your best bet is either stay with your AVG or upgrade to NOD/Kaspersky.

Howdy every one

Got the new system up & running     still need to transfer files & stuff

Befor I unpluged the old system I removed AVG from it, & that was a bit of a hassel

Ended up have to use  AVG's removal tool

I then installed MSE 2. on it just to see how it ran

web pages sure loaded a whole lot faster,

maybe I didn't need a new system

anyway thanks for the help every one

Bob

You're welcome. Glad to hear all is well. Did you try running CCleaner on the old system to see if there is anything else (temps, etc.) that can be removed? If not, let us know and we'll post instructions.
